Poor Bindi Irwin. The daughter of the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin has been at the receiving end of trolls after experiencing the happiest day of her life.
The 21-year-old Australian and her longtime American boyfriend, Chandler Powell (23), rushed to tie the knot at the Australia Zoo on 25 March, just hours after Australian prime minister Scott Morrison banned weddings of more than five people due to coronavirus fears, Daily Mail reports.
In light of this the pair decided not to have any guests, but this didn’t stop the online abusers who seemed to miss the point by accusing them of trying to “beat the ban” by having a big wedding – even though they didn’t.
After aerial footage showed a group of people huddling underneath umbrellas before the ceremony, one user lashed out, saying, “How’s that social distancing working for you? Nice umbrella cluster.”
Luckily many of their fans jumped to their defence.
“Y’all coming for Bindi Irwin who had NO guests at her wedding and got married on site at the zoo where she lives (!) are so nasty,” tweeted one.
“If any of you speak ill of Bindi Irwin for having her wedding despite the pandemic, it’s ON SITE. They didn’t have any guests and it was at the zoo where they basically live,” wrote another.
A wedding photo posted on her Instagram after the ceremony, saw Bindi explaining that having no guests was a “difficult decision, but important to keep everyone safe”.
“We wish all of our friends and family could have been there with us, however it’s lovely that we will be able to share photos and videos,” she added.
“Right now we’re encouraging the world to hold onto hope and love, which will carry us forward during this profound time in history.”
The two, who’ve been dating for six years, got engaged on Bindi’s 21st birthday in July last year.
