Comedian Mpho ‘Popps’ Modikoane has stepped out of his comfort zone, he is now dabbling as an all-rounder in the entertainment space. After being a pleasant surprise as the host of SAMAs 2018, he has backed up his plans of not just making people laugh. Mpho recently bagged yet another presenting gig DsTV Mzansi Magic, dubbed ‘Spirit of Mzansi’  where eight South Africans show-off their driving skills in the new Volkswagen Amarok Extreme. He tells Move! how about his interesting journey and how it is unfolding just as it should.

FATE

Although he never thought in a million years that he would be the centre of attention in anything because he was quite shy. “Growing up I just struggled with self-esteem issues and confidence. I used to over-think and just would not accept myself as I was,” he says. When it came to making a career decision, all he ever wanted was to make money so he studied logistics. To him, people in that field are monied. His interest in logistics quickly faded when he realised that actually, he just wanted to make people laugh, for a living. This is a decision he doesn’t regret.

COMEDY

He might be branching out into other roles such as acting and presenting but he says comedy will always be his first love. He has been nominated for the Savanna Comic’s Choice Awards 2018 in the category Savanna Comic of the Year alongside talented comedians Robbi, Skhumba, Alfred Adriaan and Carvin H Goldstone. “SA comedy is the fasted growing industry. Savanna Comic’s Choice Awards has over the years been able to give recognition to the talent in the country and I’ve been blessed to be part of the nominees for the last few years,” he says. The comic’s awards will take place on 8 September 2018 at the Lyric Theatre, a night he says he looks forward to.

FATHERHOOD

All these jobs he is getting could never amount to his job as a father, for Mpho. “I am full-time dad to a six-year-old girl. This is the most important job I have, I love being a dad,” he says.
