British songbird Ellie Goulding (33) has spoken out about how her addiction to gym nearly took over her life.

The Love Me Like You Do singer says she felt compelled to work out every day during her recent tour, even skipping recording sessions.

It was only thanks to her former Olympic rower husband Caspar Jopling (28) that she managed to get a grip on it.

“I felt as though it was a survival instinct to be working out all the time, making sure I was super fit, super healthy, and tried to counteract having drinks on tour and perhaps not eating very well,” Ellie told The Sun

She says she doesn’t consider herself “to have an addictive personality” but admits her habit did get out of hand. “It was just not fun, I felt I had to go to the gym every single day.”

Thankfully Casper, who she wed last August, helped her create a healthy relationship with exercise. “He’s just got this amazing willpower and determination.”

Getting married has been the best thing for her, Ellie says, although she admits she is tired of people asking her when they’re going to have kids. “You’d think being married would be the cue for me to be dependent on the other person, but actually I couldn't feel more independent than I do right now.

“It’s a strange paradox, because marriage seems as though it should give you some kind of closure for something. But I feel the opposite – it feels like a kind of freedom.”

In another admission, the singer says she was a “total mess” in her twenties when she started out in the music biz. “Back then I was extremely curious. What's the word for a total mess? I guess I was such a curious person, but I was very confused.”
