Girls star Lena Dunham dished up some shocking confessions during a recent appearance on the UK’s The Jonathan Ross Show including that she’s been holed up in Wales for the past few months.

Gushing that it was a “beautiful, welcoming, joyful place” the 33-year-old American actor and writer then let slip that she moved there to recover “from a broken heart”.

“It’s been a very healing experience. I love Wales, I love Welsh cakes, I love walking in the hills.”

The 33-year-old – who has previously said she’s been “diving into rebound romances” since splitting from her longterm boyfriend, Jack Antonoff, in 2017 – then added that she “ended up in a hospital in Wales, which was better than Disneyland”.

She didn’t give a reason for her hospital stay but hinted that she was newly sober and joked about getting back into the dating game again.

“I’m sober, it’s a choice, and I would say sober dating in the UK is a roughie. It was easy to find guys when I would drink because I would drink a lot, go over to their house, throw up and then they would have to let me stay.

“But in Wales when I was being a polite woman of dignity and grace, much more challenging. If anyone in the audience knows of a nice, sober, respectable but a little bit freaky man who would like to take me to dinner, I’m open.”

The star has been open in the past about her prescription drug addiction, which she started to deal with anxiety. “There were a solid three years where I was – to put it lightly – misusing benzos, even though it was all quote unquote ‘doctor prescribed’,” she said.

Lena says hardly anyone recognises her since she moved to Wales. “I just look like any Welsh lady walking around with nine hairless pets. When people did realise it was me, they definitely seemed confounded.”

As for her hit show Girls, she says the actors are all “in touch when we can be” and she hopes that the cast will reunite in the future.

She couldn’t resist a subtle dig at her Girls co-star, Adam Driver, who stars in the new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, saying, “I would love at some point once we’ve all gotten to enjoy our time in Star Wars per se, to do a movie. That would be a joy.”

She doesn’t miss her character’s naked scenes though. “I was naked so much. At first it was kind of novel and by the end I was like, ‘Oh God I go back to work and be naked again.’”
