Pete Davidson has finally opened up about his highly publicised split from pop star Ariana Grande – and it turns out Mac Miller had a lot to do with it.
During a lengthy sit-down interview with radio presenter Charlamagne Tha God, the Saturday Night Live (SNL) comedian was asked how seeing the Thank U, Next singer publicly grieve over her ex, who died from an accidental drug overdose in September 2018, affected him, People reports.
"I pretty much knew it was around over after that," the 26-year-old said, referring to their whirlwind romance and engagement which started in May – the same month she called off her two-year relationship with Miller.
"It was really horrible, and I can’t imagine what that shit is like. All I do know is she really loved the shit out of him, and she wasn’t putting on a show or anything. That was f**ked up. Prayers to his family and all of his friends."
In the wake of the rapper’s death, a source close to Ariana told People at the time that "it was devastating and shocking to her. It made her rethink many things in her life. She realised that planning a wedding felt very rushed".
During the interview, Pete, who’s also battled his own drug use and mental health issues, spoke candidly about the women he’s dated.
He described actress Kate Beckinsale, who he had a brief fling with last year, as "the funniest person I know". He also spoke about his most recent girlfriend, model Kaia Gerber, saying, "We dated for a few months. She’s very young and I’m f**king going through a lot and it was before I went to rehab."
Pete sought treatment earlier this year at the Sierra Tucson centre in Arizona which treats substance abuse, as well as eating disorders, trauma-related issues, mood and anxiety disorders.
"It’s just like she should be having fun. She shouldn’t have to worry about some dude that just has issues and shit."
He also revealed that he’s probably not going to be on SNL for much longer. "I have a weird feeling in that building where I don’t know whose team they’re playing for. If I’m the joke or I’m in on the joke. I really wanted [2019] to be my last year, but I’m still around and trying to knock it away."
He joined the show in 2014, making him one of the youngest cast members in the long-running sketch series' history. But despite the difficult work environment, the experience has helped improve his own comedy, he says.
"Being able to perform live and have to not f**k up – even though I f**k up and laugh all the time – it’s made me smarter."
