Princess Sofia of Sweden has joined frontline workers in helping coronavirus patients.
After completing an intensive training programme online, the 35-year-old wife of Prince Carl Philip has started working at Stockholm’s Sophiahemmet Hospital, of which she is Honorary Chair, People reports.
On her first day, the royal mom of two assisted hospital staff with non-medical tasks and posed for a photo alongside other workers wearing scrubs and white sneakers.
She wore an ID tag and her hair was tied back in a ponytail.
Hospitals across Sweden have been overwhelmed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, leading to the launch of the emergency training programme, with about 80 people a week completing the course.
"In the crisis we find ourselves in, the princess wants to get involved and make a contribution as a voluntary worker to relieve the large workload of healthcare professionals," the Swedish royal court said in a statement.
Volunteers will not have direct contact with Covid-19 patients, says Pia Hultkrantz, spokesperson for Sophiahemmet Hospital.
"They can disinfect equipment, do shifts in the kitchen and clean," she says.
