Cape Town - The queen has made a surprising revelation about her drinking habits.

While visiting the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) this week, the monarch revealed she doesn’t drink wine, Harper's Bazaar reports.

The 93-year-old was discussing the growing popularity of English wine with the NIAB’s chief executive, Tina Barsby, when she admitted that although she has vines in Windsor, she doesn’t actually drink wine.

"I don’t actually drink wine myself, but I hear it’s very good," she told Barsby.

The monarch didn’t elaborate further but it’s possible she used to drink wine or at least had it at formal royal events. Her cousin Margaret Rhodes allegedly once revealed the monarch drinks champagne before bed.

Even though wine may not be the queen’s beverage of choice, she does enjoy a few cocktails a day, according to a 2017 report by Business Insider.

She reportedly has her first cocktail of the day just before lunch, People reports.

Former royal chef Darren McGrady revealed the queen’s favourite drink is a gin and Dubonnet but shut down rumours that the nonagenarian has four cocktails a day.

"She'd be pickled if she drank that much," he said.
