She’s one of pop’s biggest stars, but Selena Gomez says the fame and gossip “got out of control” at one point.

In a candid interview with her friend, actress Amy Schumer, in Interview's April 2020 issue, she revealed that she battled with fame when she was a child star.

“It got out of control when I was super young,” said the actress and singer, who started working in Hollywood at the age of seven and starred in the series Wizards of Waverly Place for five years as a teenager.

“I think it showed people that I was weak in certain moments, and that I had troubles. Some people just get off on building people up and then trying to bring them down.”

The 27-year-old says she never wanted to become tabloid fodder.

“So when things kind of happened that way, it got out of control. And then I was like, ‘Wait, none of this is true.’”

Things reached crisis point when her long-term rocky relationship with Justin Bieber finally ended in 2018. The entire ordeal played out in the tabloids, often to her detriment.

“I had to start opening up because people were taking away my narrative, and it was killing me,” she says.

The result was her new album Rare, in which she strips her soul bare about that relationship and reveals her pain in the track Lose You To Love Me.

“When I wrote the song, I was basically saying I needed to hit rock-bottom to understand that there was this huge veil over my face.”

Having admitted she battles with depression as well as bipolar disorder, she says she doesn’t read any reviews of Rare to safeguard her sanity. “Getting into an internet spiral? I can’t do it.”

On a positive note she’s excited for her new make-up line, also called Rare, which is “completely organic” and environmentally-friendly.

“People of my generation have all this pressure to look a certain way, and I wanted to make a line that took away a bit of that pressure. I use real people in the campaigns. I have 48 shades of foundation and concealer. It’s all very clean and easy. I wanted people to feel safe.”
