SABC 1’s Skeem Saam cast members are beaming with excitement after being awarded the Most Popular Soapie of the Year at the Royal Soapie Awards (RSA). The Sepedi soapie came out on top at the star-studded affair in Emerald Casino beating big shows such as Isibaya, Generations- The Legacy and 7 de Laan.

Expressing the production team’s gratitude, Publicist Sumaya Mogola says, “It’s so encouraging to be given the recognition. We were up against so many of South Africa’s greatest soaps and for us to scoop this one, it just re-affirms that we are going in the right direction. We appreciate every single person that is part of Skeem Saam as well as the fans at home who watch our show.”

The show’s actor, Buhle Maseko who plays ‘Nimrod Kunutu’ says he is proud to be associated with such a show, “It is amazing to be part of a show that fuses veterans, legends of the game and you people to tell real stories - you have got a winning formula. The crew too, it gets crazy, we literally have fun at work and as a young upcoming performer you learn a lot from the older cast members. It’s a blessing.”

Veteran actress, Dieketseng Mnisi who plays ‘MaNtuli’, a feisty and strict mother who was left by her husband to be with a nyatsi, says, “It really feels good to win. I love this show because it relates to many other women, educational and all about telling real stories.”

Lesego Marakalla who plays ‘Rachel Kunutu’ won the Outstanding Female Villain award. Though a loud mouth on the show, she is media shy in real life. She was not around to accept the award on the might but says she was ‘speechless’ when she heard she had won such a big category.

Another actress who holds her own in the industry, Shoki Mmola is Celia Kunutu on Skeem Saam and she accepted the award on Lesego’s behalf, she says, “I have seen Lesego walk with ‘Rachel’, I have seen her take giant strides with her character, now she is running with Rachel Kunutu. My wish for her is to never stop, our people have grown to love her.”
