Sun, shades and a taste of Brazil

Havaianas took us back to the beach with the launch of their new eyewear collection, which embodies Brazil’s spontaneous vibrancy.

Friends of Italian eyewear brand Safilo Group gathered in scorching Sandton heat to see what Havaianas had created.

It was weird to imagine that the world’s most popular flip-flop brand, which sells more than 200 million pairs a year, decided to translate their poolside vibe into sunglasses.

Launched in August 2016 in Brazil, the collection is ready for global expansion and will be available in South Africa by March.

The sunnies were unveiled to the media and stylish personalities at a Brazilian-themed beach barbecue at Sandton Sun’s San Deck.

These select few, hosted by Taryn Louch, were able to check out the shades, try them on and keep them.

Top Billing and now Dancing with the Stars SA host Christopher Jaftha was rather cute.

He practically danced around the room – maybe to make sure we all tune into the show, which starts on M-Net next Sunday.

Whether he was trying to create hype or outshine contestant Thembisa Mdoda, we weren’t sure, but by the look of her moves, the competition is tight – almost like Jaftha’s T-shirt...

I kid, it wasn’t that tight. Maybe it was the scrumptious traditional Sunday meal they served.

Others who came out with their kaftans as the invite requested were Poppy Ntshongwana, Lalla Hirayama, Kyle Deutsch, Ayanda Nhlapo, Shashi Naidoo, Khanya Mkangisa, Mimi Mahlasela and Paledi Segapo.

Although the heat got the better of me, it was a really great Sunday, spent trying on a selection of Havaianas’ spring/summer 2018 sunnies in a shabby chic beach shack.
