Cape Town - World renowned designer Massimo Vignelli turns 80 today and is celebrating this milestone birthday at the Design Indaba, held in Cape Town, South Africa.

Massimo is known for his exceptional contributions to various sectors of the design world, including publication designs, packaging, architectural graphics, as well as exhibition, furniture and interior design.  He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including seven Honorary Doctorates in Fine Arts.

In 1996 he received the Honorary Royal Designer for Industry Award from the Royal Society of Arts, London. He has also been contracted for consumer product designs for many leading US and European companies.

Massimo is known in South Africa for his work in redesigning the Woolworths South Africa brand logo recently.

In a surprise move, Design Indaba paid tribute to the famous designer's life work.

As a special birthday treat, Massimo was serenaded with the 'Happy Birthday' tune by the Watoto children's choir from Uganda.

The choir is currently touring South Africa as part of their ambassadorial role for the charity organisation of which they are a part. Each of the children in the choir have lost a parent or guardian to either war or disease. They hope to raise funds and awareness for their cause through the tour.
