Cape Town - Queen Elizabeth has hosted receptions at Buckingham Palace for many years and we’ve come to expect a few iconic pieces when it comes to her royal attire.

But why does she insist on wearing gloves when greeting guests?

The reason is actually quite simple – being queen involves a whole lot of handshaking, which means exposure to germs.

Her Majesty recently welcomed Nato leaders to Buckingham Palace to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the alliance, Express UK reports.

She wore a grey-green print dress with notably dark black gloves as she shook hands with the world leaders.

Glove maker Cornelia James has made the queen’s gloves for over 70 years and previously revealed that even though the royal mitts serve a practical purpose, they’ve also become an integral part of the queen’s identity.

"I imagine she always has two or three pairs in her handbag to spare," she said.

"They're, number one, style. Number two: practical."
