Awards season is here and in full swing.

If this whole 'awards season' business is news to you, don't stress, we've got you and it covered. Here are the crib notes...

Recently, we watched on in surprise as Ricky Gervais embarrassed our favourite A-list celebs at the Golden Globes. One of my favourite jibes was his opening line: "Welcome to the Golden Globe Awards. Get ready for a night of drinking and partying, or as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast!" Apparently, after all that Gervais was invited back to host again next year.

Then we had the SAG Awards, where actors voted for actors and everyone was polite (and perhaps a little pretentious).

Last week Sandra Prinsloo, Casper de Vries, Shaleen Surtie-Richards and other local celebs stepped out on the blue carpet to celebrate Afrikaans arts and culture in Cape Town at the Kyk-NET Fiestas. The Fiestas is the first award ceremony to recognise Afrikaans artists who stood out on stage and behind the scenes.

And this weekend it will be the annual Grammy Awards. Mick Jagger will take to the stage for his first Grammy performance ever and Britney Spears will open the prestigious awards ceremony with her new number one hit single, Hold It Against Me. Let’s hope it goes down better than her disastrous performance of Gimme More at the MTV VMAs in 2007.

Here at Channel24 we are enthralled by awards season. Is it the anticipation of finding out whether your favourite won? Or is it the thrill of seeing your favourite celeb in a more personal way? I know some watch award shows for the fashion – millions of teens find inspiration for their matric farewell dresses.  I’m sure there are even a few brides copying the red carpet trends for their big day.

Whatever the reason, we know we can’t quite escape it and we’ve decided to share the excitement. Check out our Awards Central special report page. Here you will find the latest news and gossip from The Oscars to the MK Awards. See photos from the red carpet and get exclusive access to local and international stars.
