Dark battles in the limelight

2012-03-13 10:54
It's no secret that there's a very dark side to being an artist. Thing is, I think it's much worse than we fear. Particularly because of the scrutiny artists receive from the public.

Take Trevor Noah. He's opened up about why he left South Africa for Hollywood, and while some sympathise, others berate him for his choice. Just have a look at the comments on this story to see what I'm talking about.

Then there's the tragic loss of Andrew Thompson, a fantastic 26-year-old writer and actor who committed suicide at the weekend. Apparently he had been battling depression for a long time. It must be tough to put on a brave face for your audience when you're dealing with something like that.

His performance as Herman Putter, magician-for-hire, in Stoute Boudjies is my favourite. Which is yours? Check out our list of his best roles here.

Other artists fight very public battles, like Whitney. However, people like Joost and Amor don't fall into this category. That's just airing your dirty laundry.

Whatever the battle, I reckon fighting it under the limelight must be incredibly difficult. Sure, it's a conscious choice many make, but it's a battle nonetheless.

This one's for Andrew.
