TV to be proud of

The 6th South African Film and Television Awards are coming up this weekend.

After just six events the Saftas have become the embarrassing cousin with the bad manners in the small family that is South Africa's awards shows.

From struggling to find a broadcaster, to empty categories and the skandaals surrounding 7de Laan's omission from the Best Soap category and pulling all its nominees, it seems it's time for the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) to take stock of the value of their awards show.

If you still want to check it out, catch an edited, recorded broadcast on SABC3 on Sunday March 11 at 19:30.

It's really quite sad, isn't it? We have some outstanding local productions and yet the one platform we have to celebrate these achievements is such a disappointing one.

What are some of your favourite local TV shows? E-mail us your picks.

I'm a big fan of the kykNET soap Binneland, even though the show is losing some of its most loved and controversial characters. Where's the drama if Stefanie isn't hatching some wicked plan? She could have been the next Cherel de Villiers.

A stable, organised awards show would also foster more excitement for local productions as well as encourage those shows still struggling with production values to up their game. At the moment, everyone's just winging it. A pity really, especially since we're all going to be paying even more for our DStv subscriptions now. Sigh.

On a lighter note, take a browse through the TV guide and you're bound to find something awesome to watch on the telly tonight.
