The Self-Help Movie

The rise of the self-help movie perturbs me for two reasons.

Firstly, where have all the original stories gone? Has the self-healing, self-soothing, self-nurturing treasure trove of advice numbed our ability to imagine things other than relationships and breeding?

Secondly, clearly the message in the book wasn't received if you still have to spell it out in a predictable rom-com with hot stars.

What To Expect When You're Expecting, out in cinemas on Friday, follows in the well-trodden footsteps of flicks like Think Like A Man, He's Just Not That Into You and Mean Girls, which was actually pretty good.

The movie, based on the bestselling pregnancy go-to guide, stars a bevy of busty blondes and funny, quirky male co-stars. It's so... expected? Forgive me, I couldn't help myself.

I get that if the book did well, the movie will probably follow suit. I get that some people have no one to ask about this stuff and many a teenager has learnt everything he or she knows about sex from a bad movie. But what I don't get it why it's all so cookie-cutter.

There's got to be a better way to help the romantically, reproductively and creatively challenged folk out there.

Watch the trailer here, starring Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez, and e-mail us with your thoughts on self-help movies. Do you enjoy them? Maybe I'm missing something.

There is however one self-help book that I think would make for a very interesting movie. Click here to see what I'm talking about.
