The Tasteless Roast

2012-09-18 14:39
The taping of the Comedy Central Africa Roast of Steve Hofmeyr took place in Johannesburg last week.

Celebs and comedians came together to have a laugh at Steve's expense, and he didn't seem to mind much, except for an incident involving John Vlismas' mouth and a piece of paper. Read about it here

One of our readers commented that we as South Africans aren't ready for a "roast" because we're too sensitive. But is that such a bad thing? It's one thing to be able to laugh at yourself, it's another entirely when everyone else is doing it for you.

I just think the whole concept is in terrible taste.

One of our best-read stories this week details how Kuli Roberts felt she was "ambushed" at the event by some of the other comedians, especially Trevor Noah.

According to the article, the roast turned into a food fight as comedians served up a variety of mostly stale insults about everyone present, not just the main meal Steve.

The Comedy Central Roast of Steve Hofmeyr hasn't even aired on TV yet (catch it on Comedy Central channel 122 on Monday 24 September) and it's already rubbing people up the wrong way.

Does anyone involved in the roasting walk away from this event feeling satisfied, impressed or even entertained? I have no problem with calling Steve or any celeb out on their antics, but this is just crass. It's a celebration of how mean we can be, not how humorous our entertainers are.

I just have to ask: What was Minki van der Westhuizen doing there? Her lame line about Steve being a household name like Brooklax and Viagra just made me cringe.

Here's a sneak peek of some footage from the roast if you're keen.
