Why you should see a local movie this week

Do you watch local films? I’m not talking about watching Afrikaans made-for-TV movies on kyk-NET. And District 9 doesn't count either.

I'm talking about going to the movies and buying a ticket to see a homegrown production with local actors instead of Pirates of the Caribbean. Well, this weekend 15 000 South Africans did just that.

Roepman, a local movie based on the novel by Jan van Tonder with the same title, made it to number 4 at the box office this weekend. Franchise cash cows Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides and Fast and Furious 5  were most popular while Thor placed third.

Last week, Roepman also made headlines when it was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Another SA movie that received a lot of attention was Skoonheid. It was the first ever Afrikaans film to be screened at Cannes.

Here's the challenge.  Next time you're at the movies, don't watch Hangover 2 or the new X-Men, see something local.

On that note, I'm off to see Roepman...

'Til next week, happy movie watching!
