There are some TV villains that everyone just loves to hate. Whether it’s because they get away with breaking the rules or because they catalyse plots of destruction, a great villain can capture us in ways that a hero often can't.

Here are 5 devilish divas and villainous bad boys who are currently shaking things up on South African television.

Lindiwe Dlamini - The River

Lindiwe Dlamini, played by actress Sindi Dlathu, is the ruthless matriarch of a mining family in the telenovela The River. When the powerful Lindiwe discovers that a township community on the other side of the river is unaware that they’re sitting on a valuable diamond treasure, she is adamant to secure the land and riches to save her own crumbling mine. This cunning mining magnate will do whatever it takes to get what she wants.

Shaka Khoza - The Queen

Hard to hate and incredibly hot-headed, Shaka Khoza is the heart-throbbing bad boy on Mzansi Magic’s The Queen. Shaka, played by Sthembiso SK Khoza, is the son of a drug lord who is adamant to ascend his father’s throne. In an interview with Destiny Magazine, SK Khoza admitted that he doesn’t allow his daughters to watch him on TV because he doesn’t want to confuse them with his trigger-happy character.

Iris Zungu - Isibaya

Iris Zungu, played by Mampho Brescia, is the devious and manipulative wife of wealthy businessman Mpiyakhe Zungu in Isibaya. Set against the backdrop of a lucrative and dangerous taxi industry, Iris shows she is willing to do just about anything to retain her wealth and influence. Described by Mzansi Magic as “morally questionable and deeply flawed”, Iris is one of those hot-and-cold villains who will keep you coming back for more.

Tyson - Lockdown

Lockdown takes us into the lives of the inmates of a South African women’s prison as they battle the demons that hold them captive. Although there are many hardcore characters in Thabazimbi Women’s Correctional Service, no one messes with Tyson. In this captivatingly raw prison drama, Tyson is the prison boxing champion and gang leader who rules with her fists. Lorcia Cooper, who plays Tyson, told Huff Post SA that her character is a tough, no-nonsense, gets-what-she-wants woman.

Frik Richter - Fluiters

Veteran actor Marius Weyers takes up the role of the baddie in new local thriller Fluiters. In this addictive series written by Deon Opperman, Frik Richter is a corrupt SSA agent (South African State Security Agent) who conspires with politicians and ISIS officials to trade uranium and nuclear weapons. A group of whistle-blowers are forced to come up against them, but with double-agent villains like Frik Richter, it’s hard to know who to trust.
