5 wedding tips you can actually use from Our Perfect Wedding

Each week, Our Perfect Wedding (OPW) follows an engaged couple on their journey to the altar. The smitten pair check off and plan every item on their wishlist so that they can ultimately have their dream day and perfect wedding – but rarely do they make it down the aisle without at least a dash of drama.

From hush-hush side-chicks to aunties dissing presenter Kayise Ngqula on air, we’ve seen our fair share of spice on the Mzansi Magic reality show - the first three seasons are also available on Showmax. But through it all, there are some incredibly useful tips you can actually use for your upcoming wedding.

#1 Make a checklist

At the heart of OPW is a go-to checklist for the perfect wedding: dress, décor, cake!

Planning a wedding is not for the faint-hearted so take some tips from OPW and set up a checklist. By setting monthly targets to meet, your tasks will be staggered so that you never feel overwhelmed, say the wedding planners at The Aleit Group.

#2 Choose your speech givers well

Good or bad, wedding toasts go down in history. One of the most memorable OPW speeches has to be Nonkululeko’s best friend’s speech on the Mkhumbuzi's wedding. Fans took to Twitter to express their thoughts and were clearly not impressed.

If you’re asked to make a speech, put some thought and preparation into making it a well-worded toast about the couple. A New York Times article, The Art of the Wedding Toast, reminded speech givers to stick to the script - “Tangents are not your friend.”

#3 Get a makeup trial run

Although OPW’s Pretty Sibuyi looked beautiful at her wedding, some fans noticed some irregularities with her make-up.

Hair and make-up artist Melanie Rivers writes in Forever Bride that a make-up trial is almost like a form of insurance for the bride. “A trial run is a good time to discuss your options and to try different looks that will work for you,” she says.

#4 Say yes to the right dress

You want to spend your wedding day in your dream dress but finding the perfect one can be difficult. Follow the example of all our favourite brides on OPW and make dress hunting a fun activity. Invite close friends and family members whose opinions you trust to help you find your perfect fit.

#5 Chat about the kiss

All wedding ceremonies build up to a grand finale: “You may now kiss the bride!”. But some kisses, like Pretty and Kenny’s one, can leave the audience a little stunned.

Given that your wedding kiss is most likely not the first time you kiss your bride or groom, it’s perfectly okay (and even recommended) to have a few ground rules. “To avoid a kiss that turns out stressful or awkward, come up with a comfortable way to kiss at the wedding altar,” Reverend Laurie Sue Brockway previously wrote in

Huffington Post. “Make sure you have fun practising!”
