Do you love thought-provoking dramas? Or prefer to lose yourself in a hilarious comedy series? Live for fantasy sagas? There’s no need to leave your couch when you binge these excellent series on Showmax.

Top picks

Game of Thrones

The final season of the biggest show in history is on right now, and it’s incredible. If, however, you’re one of the few who hasn’t seen it yet, never fear - all seven-and-a-bit seasons are available to binge on Showmax. Season 8 finishes on 20 May, so you’ve got a bit of time to catch up from the beginning, or to rewatch your favourite episodes. Check out all seven previous seasons along with the new episodes of Season 8 that have arrived every Monday since 15 April on Showmax.

Billions

Sink your teeth into the first three seasons of Billions, and then watch the brand-new fourth season, coming to Showmax at the same time as DStv every Wednesday night. US Attorney Chuck Rhoades genuinely wants to do the right thing - and he finds his natural enemy in shady hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod. Pick a side - it might not be the one you expect.

Luther

DCI John Luther is not a conventional cop. He’s a detective in the Serious Crime Squad, and his unconventional methods and his twisted personality make for a dark, dramatic show. Idris Elba won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the troubled detective. Binge all five seasons on Showmax.

The Good Wife

Inspired by real-life political scandals involving married men, this smash-hit drama series follows Alicia Florrick, wife of a disgraced state's attorney. She has to pick up the pieces of her family and revive her law career. The show has won a tonne of awards, including a Golden Globe and two Emmys for Julianna Margulies as Florrick. Watch the full seven-season boxset on Showmax!

The classics

Like a good wine (or pair of vintage Manolo Blahniks) some things just get better with age. There are plenty of fan-favourite series you can revisit right from the beginning.

It’s been 20 years, but The Sopranos is as brilliant as ever. Binge Seasons 1-6. For another “greatest of all time” series, watch five seasons of HBO’s The Wire - TV just doesn’t get grittier than this.

If you came of age in the Noughties, you’ll definitely want to catch up on all of Sex and the City (six seasons) plus all 10 seasons of Friends.

If comedy’s your vibe, look out for all five seasons of Silicon Valley. Showmax is the only place you can watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine S1-5 as well. Plus, spend quality time with the most hapless people in American politics in the first six seasons of Veep - the seventh season is coming to Showmax in May!

More recent, but still one to catch up on so you can keep up with water cooler conversation is the first two seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale (Season 3 lands on Showmax later this year, and we’re terrified/thrilled to see how Offred fares). For lighter drama, see every tiara, every cup of tea and every delightfully pointed jab in Downton Abbey.

If you love local, don’t forget that your daily dose of top-notch drama is waiting for you on Showmax, with the likes of express episodes of The River, The Queen and Isithembiso, plus every episode of Housekeepers and Dwaalster, not to mention Suidooster and a whole lotta Binnelanders.
