It’s an old story we all know and love - small town girl has a dream and moves to the big city to make it come true where she faces and must overcome obstacles to make this dream a reality. She is King is South Africa’s version of this tale and just like the all very best stories - inspires us to make our own dreams come true!

This musical which tells the story of Khanyisile Khumalo, portrayed by Gugu Zule of Idols SA fame, who travels from her home in Nongoma, Kwa-Zulu Natal to the big city of Joburg to audition for … (you guessed it!) a musical show, based on the life Zulu queen, Mkabayi.

This is the first time that She Is King will be available to stream in South Africa and you can catch it on Showmax. Here are three reasons why you should make this the movie to watch tonight!

1. Stirring songs that make you laugh and cry - Who doesn’t love a musical?

She is King features a talented cast who performs fantastic original music. The director, Gersh Kgamedi said in an interview with Business Live that the reason they chose the musical genre is because it has not been used extensively in local black films since the ever popular Sarafina and they were also inspired by the success of the theatrical production of The Lion King.

2. The best of the best on-screen talent - It has an all-star cast!

The cast of She is King includes Aubrey Poo (Isidingo) as the musical show’s director, Khanyi Mbau (Happiness is a Four-Letter Word) as the charismatic, lovable and utterly convincing seasoned stage actress Vivian coming to the end of her career. It also includes Mandisa Nduna (Hustle) and Sophie Ndaba (Generations) plus  Khabonina Qubeka (Isidingo) who grabs our attention as Gugu Dhlamini, Khanyisile’s antagonist. This experienced cast helps to shape the film fill it with spice and local flavour that makes it a delight to watch.

3. YAASS girl - It’s a story of female power!

There’s no space for damsels in distress in this musical. The film has a range of powerful female characters who are independent and tough – they aren’t waiting on a knight in shining armour (or shiny BMW) to rescue them!

Kgamedi said that their aim with the film as for young women to believe in their ability and to be who they want to be. He said he wanted to erase the distinction between king and queen - “just as a woman can be a president, she can also be a king.”
