As we commemorated Youth Day on the 16th of June, it’s time to celebrate the talents of young trailblazers in the music industry this month.

We turned to JOOX’s Top 40 to see who the hottest young musicians currently are in SA and the world. Here are 7 of them making waves this year and worth adding to your playlists asap!

Billie Eillish

At just 17 years old, Billie Eillish currently has the whole world jamming to her latest hit Bad Guy. In the space of just three years, this LA born musician has become one of the most streamed artists since her debut single Ocean Eyes was released.

Kwesta

South African rapper Kwesta needs no introduction but his latest single, Khethile Khethile, will let fans see a whole new side of him. Kwesta, who wed partner Yolanda Mvelase in March this year, gave everyone a seat at his wedding for this songs music video as he included footage from his big day. Awww!

Mabel

With music in her DNA, Mabel McVey is a 23-year-old worth keeping an eye on. This Spanish-English singer, songwriter and generational goal-setter is the daughter of singer Neneh Cherry and producer Cameron McVey but has also paved a way for herself from a young age. Here’s her latest hit Don’t Call Me Up.

Rafentse

Refentse Morake is a young man with a big voice who has won the heart of many South Africans. The 21-year-old Refentse grew up in Vereeniging in Gauteng and started making waves after he was spotted at the KKNK (Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees) in 2015. Rafentse’s cover of Old Town Road on JOOX with fellow Saffas Elandré and Kwesta is a must add to your Youth Day playlist. Here's his rendition of the Afrikaans classic Sonvanger

Msaki

Indie-afro-folk songstress Msaki finds her roots firmly planted in the Eastern Cape but her voice has taken her all over. “There was always singing or someone playing the piano at home. It helped me realise that my gift was not to be taken for granted,” she previously told Bona. We absolutely love her collabs with artists like Black Coffee, Tresor and Prince Kaybee.

Halsey

The Bad at Love singer Halsey is a youthful sensation and an icon in so many ways. The Grammy-nominated singer is also an avid activist for women’s right and made her voice heard when she teamed up with the Centre for Health and Gender Equity to stop the Global Gag Rule. Although we can’t all be 24-year-old, musical world changers, you can’t blame us for dreaming.

Tresor

Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Tresor decided to pursue his music career in Durban in 2007. Since then he’s been blazing through the South African music scene with soulful tunes and state of the art music videos. Here’s a collab of him with homegirl Msaki.
