Don’t worry about how to kick back and relax over the winter weekends this July, because we’ve got you covered! Between nail-biting dramas, alluring sci-fi’s and local telenovelas you’ll have plenty of binge-worthy series to watch this month.

Siren, S1

A sequence of eerie events occurs when a mysterious girl, Ryn (Eline Powell), shows up looking for her sister in Bristol Cove, a town known for its legend of once being home to mermaids. But as Indiewire describes it, this aquatic avenging angel “ain’t no Ariel”. With a lot of mermaid fantasy-action and suspense, Siren season 1 will keep you at the edge of your seat. Look out for Zimbabwean-born Sibongile Mlambo, who plays Ryn’s captured mermaid sister, Donna.

Lockdown, S1-2

Lockdown takes us into the lives of the inmates of a South African women’s prison as they battle the demons that hold them captive. According to City Press, Lockdown works in a space opened by Orange Is the New Black but is nevertheless unique, more serious and trades in issues and storylines that affect South African women.

The Fosters, S1-5

The Fosters have already captivated many from season 1 to 4 and with the fifth and final season airing only on Showmax this month, it’s the perfect time to get to know this beautiful mosaic family. Stef Foster and Lena Adams, an interracial lesbian couple, adopted two siblings while also trying to juggle raising Latino twin teenagers and Stef's biological son. The Fosters follows the journey of each member of the family as they navigate seasonal challenges while learning the true meanings of love and family.

The River, daily episodes

Many South Africans have been religiously hooked to local soapies like 7de Laan, Isidingo and Generations at some point and know the feeling of planning a day around their airings. The newest member to this calibre of home-grown series, The River, is no exception and will keep you glued for weeks (if not years). Based on the discovery of a diamond in Cullinan, The River explores the divide that the precious stone brings between two families. New episodes air daily after their broadcast on 1Magic and more than 100 previous episodes are available for the most epic soapie omnibus ever.

Younger, S1-5

Exploring the careful world constructed on one major lie, Younger is all about defying age stereotypes. This rom-com follows the life and times of 40-something-year-old divorcee Liza (Sutton Foster) who poses as a millennial to rebuild her life. The NY Times describes it as a light-hearted but knowing look at the gender imbalances and generational rifts that make life hard – even for fabulous women. With a star-studded cast including Hilary Duff and Debi Mazar, Younger is an absolute must-see.
