We love reality

It’s the month of love, people, so nothing could be more appropriate than to celebrate one of  Mzansi’s greatest love stories. Somizi & Mohale: The Union takes you through every luxurious, extravagant, deliciously OTT moment of Somizi Mhlongo and Mohale Motaung’s gorgeous white wedding, and also tells the romantic story of their relationship and earlier traditional wedding. The four-part wedding special is streaming exclusively on Showmax from 24 February.

And there’s even more outrageous reality with four new seasons of Love Island UK, Australia and USA, debuting on Valentine’s Day. Be warned - it’s seriously addictive stuff.

Killer series

This month, we’re already deep into Season 5 of Lockdown, SA’s gritty prison drama that’s now screening exclusively on Showmax. It kicked off with betrayals and revelations. There’s always trouble brewing at Thabazimbi Women’s Correctional Facility. Watch Lockdown on Showmax now »

Oscar-winner Rami Malek stars in the fourth season of Mr. Robot as Elliot, a brilliant but highly unstable cyber-security engineer and hacker who becomes a key figure in a complex game of global cat and mouse. Christian Slater also stars in what Vice called “the defining show of the 2010s”. Binge S1-4 now »

Oscar-nominee John Malkovich dons the papal robes as The New Pope a.k.a. Pope John Paul III. He stars alongside Jude Law, reprises his Golden Globe-nominated role as Pope Pius XIII, who is lying in a coma. Watch it now »

Love Sex And The City, but wish it was up to date? Then check out The Bold Type. Season 3 has just landed and it’s as fresh and fabulous as ever. It follows three women who work for a New York fashion mag and all face their own challenges in life and love. Don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s just fluff - it scored 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Watch all three seasons now »

If you’re feeling concerned about the coronavirus crisis, don’t miss The Hot Zone. It’s a fictionalised account of an Ebola outbreak in the US, and shows just how quickly a global epidemic can spread. It stars Julianne Marguiles. Watch it now »

More gems include seasons of Black-ish and Grown-ish, and A Black Lady Sketch Show, which stars some of the hottest black female talents out there, from Issa Rae to Angela Bassett.

Night at the movies

It’s just won the Oscar for best original song, and with Elton John behind the music - and the story - who could be surprised? Rocketman, the Elton John biopic, stars Taron Egerton, who won a 2020 Golden Globe for his role.

Previous award winners include the darkly funny I, Tonya, about the 1994 figure skating scandal, and A United Kingdom, which tells the true love story of Botswana’s Seretse Khama and his British wife, Ruth Williams.

For the kids, check out The Snail and the Whale, a Julia Donaldson classic animated by Cape Town-based Triggerfish, and featuring the voices of Sally Hawkins and Rob Brydon. It’s coming first to Showmax.

And for a local gem, try An Act of Defiance, the inspiring true story of Bram Fischer, the advocate at the heart of the Rivonia Trial.
