It’s the most compelling story of all: a meteoric rise, followed by a spectacular fall. That’s the tale of charismatic entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes and her blood-testing company Theranos. Hear about the promises, secrets and lies in the HBO documentary, The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley.
In 2014, Theranos was the Silicon Valley startup that promised to disrupt the healthcare industry. It was valued at US$9 billion, and promised to transform medicine by enabling testing for hundreds of diseases from a tiny drop of blood.
Two years later, the company was coming apart at the seams amid claims of massive fraud. Fast forward to today: the founder, Elizabeth Holmes, is facing charges that might send her and the company’s COO to jail.
The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley follows the story, incorporating footage of Holmes and her husky-voiced spin, and interviewing a cast of characters from the people who helped build the company to the journalists and whistleblowers who tore it down.
The documentary, which was released in March this year to wide acclaim, was directed by Oscar winner Alex Gibney. He’s also covered such hot topics as Wikileaks, Scientology and the Enron scandal, so he’s familiar with the dark underbelly of American power.
