When Thando Hopa was at a shoot for a recent DStv campaign, she was asked to choose a word that she thinks best defines her, in honour of Women’s Month.

She was on set with a number of well-known and emerging personalities, including YouTube sensation Lesego Tlhabi a.k.a. Coconut Kelz, South Africa’s first black female fighter pilot Major Mandisa Mfeka and actress Tsholofelo Matshaba of The Throne.

“My word is ‘Multi-faceted’,” said Thando. “The reason I chose it is because we’ve been raised to believe we can only be one thing. In my profession, I can delve into different fraternities. And I can allow myself, and my cultural identity as a woman, to be as diverse as I want it to be.”

“I believe that women have a universe inside them. We are never singular. We are complex, and we never need to fear that complexity.”

Thando Hopa was the first woman with albinism on the cover of Vogue Portugal, but this is by no means her only achievement. As a model, activist and lawyer, Thando is the ultimate example of how women are a force to be reckoned with. Here’s some behind the scenes footage of her in the DStv #WomenAre campaign.
