SA's Got Talent – Live Semi-final 1

2009-11-10 07:40

We're into the last week of SA's Got Talent and as excited as I am for the performances, I'm so happy to be rid of the weirdly friendly, campy Randall after Thursday! He totally makes me think of an evil clown who's going to whip out a chainsaw from under that chair. You're either evil or nice; in between is just creepy.

Monday night saw seven of the 21 semi-finalists battle it out for one of two spots in Thursday's finale. Congrats to beatboxer George Avakian for scoring the most votes and wowing the crowd. I'm usually immune to the soppy family intros, but when George said that a lot of the time his beatboxing was the only thing putting food on the table, my heart turned to lumpy custard. Not only is he so very very good at what he does, he's such a die-hard! His larger-than-life personality scored him a slot at the Idols finale last year despite not making the top 24. And let's not forget that adorable smile and slick demeanour. He's got girls eating out of, uh, his mouth...

If you missed it last night, this is how the selection process goes. The contestant with the most votes is assured of a place in the final, while the 2 contestants with the second and third most votes (they don't reveal positions here) are decided between by the judges. Guitar virtuoso Louwtjie Rothmann from Cape Town and dancing duo Cameron and Natasha went head-to-head for the judges' votes. Louwtjie came out trumps with only Shado voting for the kiddies. When Ian gave his vote, poor Natasha burst into tears and Ian felt like the big bad wolf. But, I'd have to agree with him.

The crowd went wild after Cam and Natasha's dance routine; the judges praised them, and I was like 'huh'? As cute as they were, Cameron is number 1 in that duo. Natasha is just a prop that he leads around the stage. She also seemed way out of sync when they danced separately. Yes, they're only 8 years old, and they could probably dance circles around me, but this is a talent competition, not a 'cute' parade. My heart breaks for them, but out of the two, Louwtjie was the intelligent choice.

Having said that, I'm so bummed Roses never made it. The 6-man dance crew was in no way clowning around. They had amazing choreography, energy, great outfits and such attitude. What a pity...

As good as all the acts were (with the exception of Jody Kleinhans who left his funny at home last night), I think the most talented were rewarded. So good on you, SA!

Tonight we see 7 more acts, and you'll vote again for your favourite. Let your fingers do the talking and we'll discuss your performance tomorrow.

*SA's Got Talent will air live from Monday to Thursday this week on SABC 2 at 19:30 with the live results show at 21:30.
