3 Things to Remember for the Durban July

I'm super amped about this weekend and I'm sure that all roads descending to Durban will be heavily congested with race horse fanatics and LOTs (Likers of Things). And so they should be because nothing beats having fun in the sun, playing dress up with your buddies and betting on beautiful looking horses.

But before we all go crazy this weekend and lose our minds and money, I think that are a couple of things that people should remember, especially because it's going to be an intense weekend, both socially and financially. So here's my bit of advice: *cues in Oprah voice*

Since part of the event is about fashion and ensuring that you are among the most elegantly or outrageously dressed, make sure that you're dressed to the nines. For all those people who like taking fashion chances, this is your once in a lifetime opportunity to look like a tsunami of mismatched fabric and get away with it.

But please people, don't spend money that you don't have in renting out or buying dresses or suits that you'll wear for only a day. The last thing you want when you get back home is to receive a call from loan sharks demanding their loan re-payments because you took out a loan for an outfit. You'll be heavily embarrassed.

Now guys, there'll be thousands of marquees at the event which you will have access to if you have tickets to enter the marquees. Don't stand outside a marquee like a well-dressed con artist trying to smile or befriend party goers so that they can pay for you to get in. Save yourself immense embarrassment and rather opt for going back to your hotel to sleep (that's if have a hotel room to begin with).

Also, remember that media cameras will be everywhere in the marquees capturing footage, so if you know that you're a drunken disaster after having one or two glasses of wine, make sure that the cameras don't capture you in your less desirable state. It's for your own good.

The whole purpose of the event is the horse races; to bet on the horse which you think will win races and in turn, win or lose big amounts of money. So as much as you're there for the glitz and glam, spending money on expensive drinks and outfits and chit-chatting with people that you don’t necessarily know or care about, make sure that you place your bets.

But you have to know your way around horse racing. You need to know your horses and their owners and work out the possibilities of which horse will be in the top 5 positions, therefore raising your chances of winning. Whip out all your horse racing expertise, and perhaps you could return to your humble abode as a millionaire.

This weekend is going to be another celeb-studded, glamorous affair as much as it will be a horse racing one. So as much as I have given you things to remember, make sure you have a blast!

The Vodacom Durban July takes place on Saturday, 6 July and will be broadcast live from 14:30 to 17:00 on SABC 3.
