We asked our readers for their thoughts about the first season of MasterChef SA, currently airing on M-Net. While the details differed, there was definitely more criticism than praise for the reality show.

"I am a lover of all things MasterChef but I must agree that the contestants do not get enough screen time. I would love to see more of them. I love sue-Anne but hardly see her.

"Also, when the judges do the taste tests, why do they have to eat the food as if they're sucking a lollipop or ice stick? It's as if they try too hard to look stern and intimidating," wrote Derrick Moos.

Roelien Parkin thinks the South African version of the show is a watered down version of the overseas shows.

"The local Masterchef  is a far cry from the good quality cooking and contestants we see on BBC. The dishes seem far too easy, I feel every housewife in SA can cook those, well I know I can... I think the editor does not like Ilse much, you hardly ever see her dishes," she said.

However, she enjoyed the fact that the show was proudly South African, and despite her gripes, she'll watch it 'til the end.

"I do like the fact that they are keeping it very South African and are promoting some "local is lekker" recipes with some of their challenges... Let's hope the last couple left show us some great talent and makes it worth our while, I will watch to the end as I love cooking so let's hold thumbs it gets better."

'Pathetic mimicry'

Fitz Townsend was more critical of the show and thinks it is bad imitation of the Australian version.

"Masterchef SA is a pathetic mimicry of the Oz production ... and we fall far short. The most important issue to me is that the plates presented for judging look so amateurish, unimpressive, and uninspiring.

"Added to that is the unoriginal management by the judge. One has to laugh at one of the ads for this show, when a judge gives this limp 'Wow' on tasting a dish."

Another reader, Bev, thinks the show was a disappointment.

"It is such a letdown!!!I too eagerly awaited our local production & expected somewhat more... Anyway, we sat back in anticipation…enter judges …urgh!!!!…Not wanting to slam the local production we eagerly waited to see their culinary skills because they clearly LACK personal skills – not to mention basic table manners! They eat like pigs," she wrote.
