10 brand-new shows on internet TV

Cape Town - It’s the start of a new month, which means a bumper batch of series on your screens that you’ve never seen before.

1. The Girlfriend Experience, S1-2 (Showmax)

Called "utterly bingeworthy" by critics, this captivating drama follows several women who lead double lives as professional escorts. Riley Keough (who happens to be Elvis Presley’s granddaughter) plays the main role of Christine, a law-firm intern who lives a double life as escort Chelsea. But it's not just about the sex - they provide much more. Strictly no under-18s.

2. Rise, S1 (Showmax)

With few prospects, the students in a working-class school have little to look forward to. Opportunity knocks when a new teacher takes over the drama department, but what about the drama in their lives?

3. The Last Post  (Showmax)

Based deep in the Middle East, far from home, the soldiers and families of a British outpost have to navigate life and duty while facing a growing insurgency against them in this lush and engrossing historical drama.

4. Future Man (Showmax)

When janitor Josh (Josh Hutcherson from The Hunger Games) beats an impossible video game, soldiers from the future choose him to save the world. But it turns out he's much more of a loser than they thought...

5. Vanity Fair (DStv Now and Showmax)

This gorgeous, brand-new series is an adaptation of William Thackeray's 1848 novel about Becky Sharp and her friends and family during the Napoleonic Wars. Starring Olivia Cooke, Tom Bateman and Johnny Flynn.

6. Alex Inc (DStv Now)

Radio journalist Alex Schuman quits his job in order to pursue his dream of starting a podcast company. Golden Globe-nominee Zach Braff stars as Alex, and his partner and second-cousin Eddie is played by Michael Imperioli, who eagle-eyed viewers will recognise from his Emmy-winning role as young Christopher Moltisanti from The Sopranos.

7. All American (DStv Now)

Spencer (Daniel Ezra) is a football star from a low-income LA school who gets offered a place at the prestigious Beverly Hills High. His mother and his best friend Coop convince him that it’s an opportunity he has to seize, but when Spencer moves in with the football coach and his family, the coach’s jealous son reminds Spencer that a new school is the least of his worries.

8. Welcome to the Neighbourhood (DStv Now)

(Also known as The Neighbourhood.) A white family from the Midwest move into a tough LA neighbourhood, much to the amusement and chagrin of their predominantly black neighbours. Starring Cedric the Entertainer as the outspoken patriarch next door who is more protective of his smoker than anything else. 

9. Bodyguard (Netflix)

After helping thwart a terrorist attack, a war veteran (played by Richard Madden, who you’ll know as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones) is assigned to protect the politician who was the main proponent of the very conflict he fought in, in this gripping British series that has a 100% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

10. The Romanoffs (Amazon Prime)

From the creator of Mad Men, The Romanoffs is a contemporary anthology series set around the globe featuring eight separate stories about people who believe themselves to be descendants of the Russian royal family. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Aaron Eckhart, Diane Lane, Christina Hendricks, Amanda Peet, Kathryn Hahn, Hugh Skinner, Andrew Rannells and more.
