13 things Kagiso Modupe will miss about being on Scandal!

Cape Town - Everyone from the security guards to the actors have made Kagiso Modupe’s time on the popular soapie an absolute pleasure.

The actor, adored by fans for his role as Mangaliso “Mangi” Nyathi, stunned the showbiz industry when he announced he’d quit Scandal! in March 2018 to explore a career as a musician.

Reflecting on his 13 years and 3 000 episodes on the e.tv show, Kagiso says he enjoyed the sense of family he had with everyone on set.

“They were with me through the highs and lows. “Line producer Natalie Prinsloo was my mama. The way the production team was there for me when I lost my dad, Molly, in 2014 – they organised a bus for his funeral.”

Kagiso will also miss the legendary themed year-end functions, he says with a laugh, because “it always had cool themes such as a beach party or carnival”.

1. When I was written out of the script but performed so well when my character became a druggie. The storyline broke the Scandal! record for highest ratings!

2. I was about to get married to my wife, Liza Lopes, and was shooting my last scene of the day. When I went outside the crew and cast cheered for me and my marriage.

3. Road shows – that’s the only time you really feel the love from the fans.

4. Getting fan letters!

5. Laughing after takes.

6. Actors challenging one another – we throw a different line in while shooting or do a different gesture and challenge one another’s reactions.

7. Having my daughter, Tshimollo (7), play Palesa’s (Refilwe Madumo) child when she was just a few months old.

8. Telling my dad, Molly Modupe, I got the job. He was too proud.

9. Singing in the morning when doing make-up with the cast.

10. Leaving the show on a good note rather than being poached by another channel. I’m a free agent now.

11. Developing relationships with new cast members when Luthuli Dlamini and Siyabonga Thwala left the show.

12. Going on stage when Scandal! won the Safta award for best ensemble TV soap.

13. Watching the show grow from 300 000 to 5 million viewers.
