6 foul-mouthed stand-ups to watch if you had a shitty week

Cape Town - The best way to end off a week of high drama? Dirty jokes, black humour and over-share-y anecdotes from some of the best comics in the game. And they’re all on Showmax and Netflix for your bingeing pleasure.

1) Amy Schumer (Available on Showmax)

With both her recent HBO stand-up performance, Live at the Apollo, and her first one-hour comedy special, Mostly Sex Stuff, on the line-up, Showmax is your Schumer go-to when you’re craving OTT honesty and hilarious observations about modern-day dating, pubic-hair-grooming appointments, and the struggle to be seen as sexy while occupying a normal human body.

2) Whitney Cummings (Available on Showmax)

Whitney Cummings gives absolutely zero fucks. She’s angry, she’s bitter, and she’s totally on point when it comes to the utter nonsense women are forced to put up with today. If you've ever been scolded by your man for taking too long in the bathroom, or if the voices in your head are borderline abusive about how much food you've eaten, Whitney's your woman. Watch both her audaciously adult HBO special I’m Your Girlfriend and her 2014 performance I Love You on Showmax.

3) John Oliver (Available on Showmax)

John Oliver: Terrifying Times is vintage Oliver, his first-ever stand-up special, filmed for Comedy Central in 2008, which got him his name in the States as America’s favourite British comedian. He may have moved on to becoming an award-winning talk-show host, but his “mongrel” accent, his dry wit, exaggerations and his understanding of the differences between his home country and the US, which make his current TV appearances so funny, are right in your face in this special.

4) Trevor Noah (Available on Netflix)

Whether or not you’re one of the lucky who ones who got tickets to the Joburg gigs of SA’s funniest export for last night or tonight, you won’t go wrong with his New York stand-up gig from earlier this year. Noah tackles big issues of the day including race, nationalism and immigration with impressions, accents and anecdotes from his own life that will have you in stitches.

5) Hasan Minhaj (Available on Netflix)

He’s the third comic on our list to have the Daily Show on his resume, and after seeing Minhaj’s high-energy, intelligent routine in Homecoming King, we’re so glad he finally got his own stage. He’s a first-generation American, and a Muslim, so he’s got a lot of funny - and heartbreaking - stories about growing up in modern-day America in an immigrant family. See his take on the American Dream in his first, brand-new stand-up special.

6) Ali Wong (Available on Netflix)

How many pregnant stand-up comics have you watched? Until you watch Ali Wong’s Baby Cobra, your answer’s probably zero. This comedy special is mostly about the totally unglamorous, shameful ways pregnancy and parenthood changes you, and if you or your partner have been pregnant or have ever considered starting a family, this is compulsory viewing. She also explains why feminism is the worst thing to happen to women, and we can’t help but agree with her reasoning.
