6 highly anticipated series that have finally arrived on internet TV

Cape Town - We've waited for them all year, and now they're here! 

It’s been a big few weeks for streaming services Showmax, DStv Now, Netflix and Amazon Prime. Here are some of 2019’s most exciting series, which recently launched on a platform near you. (Bonus picks: The first episodes of Big Little Lies S2 and The Handmaid’s Tale S3 will be coming to DStv Now and Showmax on Monday, 10 June, with new weekly episodes every Monday.)

1. Patrick Melrose (Showmax)

Patrick Melrose is a member of 1980s Britain’s upper class, having had a privileged but troubled childhood. Now, his problems extend beyond a growing drug habit. Multiple award winner starring Benedict Cumberbatch, and based on the beloved novels/memoirs by Edward St Aubyn.

2. Veep S7 (DStv Now) 

The Golden Globe-nominated antics on Capitol Hill return for the final season. In her new campaign, Selina (Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus) finds herself running against the person she least expected, while Gary, Amy and Kent grapple with Selina’s enormous ego.

3. Chernobyl (DStv Now) 

The human story of the Chernobyl disaster is brought to life by brilliant performances from Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson and Jared Harris in a gripping series that follows the responders who made incredible sacrifices to contain the nuclear fallout.

4. Black Mirror S5 (Netflix) 

The dystopian series returns with three new episodes. In Striking Vipers, two old college buddies reconnect in a VR version of their favourite video game; Smithereens is about a London rideshare driver who kidnaps a high-profile business exec; and Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too sees Miley Cyrus playing a celebrated pop star whose life is about to unravel.

5. When They See Us (Netflix) 

A four-part limited series from award-winning director Ava DuVernay that explores the criminal justice system through the true case of the Central Park Five – five young teenagers who were wrongfully accused and convicted of rape. Brace yourself: this is not easy watching.

6. Good Omens (Amazon Prime) 

This series is based on the Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett novel, with Gaiman as the showrunner. David Tennant plays Crowley, a hard-living demon, and Michael Sheen plays his antithesis, Aziraphale, a prim-and-proper angel. When the end of times draws near, they team up to find the Antichrist, an 11-year-old boy who’s gone missing, in the hopes of keeping their luxurious earthly lifestyles.
