7 local series and movies to stream this weekend

Cape Town - Reality is grim, folks. But staying indoors this weekend and binge-watching these homegrown gems on internet TV? Highly recommended.

1. Housekeepers (Showmax + DStv Now)

Out to avenge her mother's death, Linda takes a job as a helper to help plan her revenge. But her desires will come at a great cost in this thrilling new series as she dives deeper into an unknown world of secrets and scandals. Available to stream on DStv Now for Premium subscribers on 1Magic on Saturdays and Compact subscribers on Mzansi Magic on Mondays. Streaming express from Mzansi Magic on Showmax every Monday.

2. The River (Showmax + DStv Now)

The Dlaminis and the Mokoenas are two families from very different backgrounds who are brought together and divided by the discovery of a diamond in Cullinan, just a stone’s throw from Pretoria. This addictive telenovela airs Monday to Friday on 1Magic, so you can stream it live on DStv Now, or watch on Showmax, where new episodes land every weekday within 15 minutes of the 1Magic broadcast.

3. The Imposter (Showmax + DStv Now)

Twins Mantwa and Matshepo Tau go to war after the one causes the other to be locked up in jail. When she escapes, a plot hatches to take over her sister's life in this twisted thriller series. Season 1 is streaming on Showmax, and Season 2 on DStv Now.

4. She Is King (Showmax)

Moving from a rural town to Johannesburg, a young woman dreams of being a star. When she lands a big role in a major play, it's her chance to shine! But the road to success has many roadblocks in this star-studded local movie. Showmax is the only place you’ll find it in SA, so if you missed it at the cinema last summer, now’s your chance to catch up.

5. Lockdown (DStv Now)

The final episodes of Season 3 of this hugely popular drama set in a women’s prison are now available to stream on DStv Now. It all comes to a head in the finale when Minister Mazibuko holds a press conference about the raid and prison lockdown, and Phindi starts to piece together the puzzle of Grace’s cryptic clues.

6. The Real Housewives of Johannesburg (DStv Now)

Further proof that anything Americans can do, South Africans can do better (with more mess, more drama and more dirt). The antics of the women on RHOJ need to be seen to be believed. Indulge your curiosity by catching up on episodes 8, 9 and 10 on DStv Now, and then live stream episode 11 when it airs on 1Magic on Friday at 19:00. (Is Christall finally, finally going to launch her single?)

7. Catching Feelings (Netflix)

Amid growing tensions in their marriage, a Johannesburg professor and his journalist wife find their lives upended by a famous, hard-partying author. Directed, written by and starring Kagiso Lediga, alongside Pearl Thusi.
