Johannesburg - The producers of SABC2 soapie 7de Laan have responded to complaints from Afrikaans viewers after they aired a promotional spot celebrating their South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) success in English only.
Danie Odendaal Produksies, which produces the SABC2 soap opera, apologised to Afrikaans viewers who took issue over the fact that the promo did not cater to their language.
The promo was intended as a special thank you to viewers who helped the show snag the Best Soap award in the SAFTAs public vote in March.
'Very diverse audience'
"Danie Odendaal Produksies fully understands why the Afrikaans viewers are upset and would like to ensure viewers that 7de Laan remains a truly South African Afrikaans soap," the show said in a statement released on Friday.
"7de Laan has a very diverse audience and as many as 43% of our viewers are non-Afrikaans speaking, and are made up of English, Nguni, Sotho and Other language fans. There was no intention to upset or exclude any of our fans, in fact quite the opposite," the statement continues.
Danie Odendaal Produksies said they would endeavour to make a greater effort to ensure their content is more inclusive and sensitive to all viewers' needs.
7de Laan, one of South Africa's longest-running soapies, airs Monday-Friday on SABC2 at 18:30.
