Censors welcome porn decision

2013-04-24 17:00
Johannesburg - The Film and Publication Board (FBP) on Wednesday welcomed Icasa's decision to grant TopTV rights to broadcast pornography.

"As the FPB we are encouraged to see that the Independent Communications Authority of SA [Icasa] considered our representations and placed on TopTV stringent conditions," CEO Yoliswa Makhasi said.

"These representations were premised on the protection of children from exposure to potentially harmful content and in this case explicit content," said Makhasi.

On Wednesday Icasa granted the pay channel rights to broadcast pornography.

"Icasa, hereby, gives notice that it has authorised On Digital Media [operating as TopTV] to broadcast the three adult content channels Playboy TV, Desire TV, and Private Spice within the watershed period," it said in a statement.

The authorisation of the application followed an extensive public consultation process, which Icasa undertook prior to granting the application by On Digital Media.

The Christian Democratic Party (CDP) described Icasa's decision as appalling.

“While a permissive lifestyle appears to be acceptable to Icasa, they have in the past shut down numerous Christian radio stations," party leader Reverend Theunis Botha said.

“When it comes to pornography, however, or other damaging permissive values, freedom of everything suddenly applies, except the freedom of those who do not want to see the country exposed to such filth and the consequences thereof.”

I think porn is TopTV's last hope before they declare bankrupty.

      Didn't China just buy TopTV?

  • Nhamo Dzenyika - 2013-04-24 17:25

Good decision because it is not from free-to-air channel. Only those who want the stuff will subscribe and looks like TopTv has just revived its fortunes. Talk of a masterstroke

      ... masterstroke... ha-ha!

  • Sibusiso Shabalala - 2013-04-24 17:49

    Absolutely shocking.

@toby, REALLY? So when the evidence points in one direction, you just automatically assume the opposite. How can it be that communities with more Christians have more atheists? Isn't this illogical? Or do you simply need this to be true in order to ignore the reality?

      GB Garratt - 2013-04-24 19:29

Toby Shame man. When you don't like the facts you make up your own interpretations of them. But then Christians are masters at manipulating interpretations of the bibble. rejecting those bits that don't suit your preconceptions of what you want you god to be. Facts are, Christans are hypocrites and love porn. TopTV knows there are lots of Christians in South Africa for there new channels..

In some ways this was inevitable unfortunately. Imagine all the same mistakes as Babylon, Soddom and Gomorrah all over again. Seems like Men and Women will never learn from their previous mistakes.

      Ian Calder - 2013-04-25 07:38

Yep, while we are talking about biblical references, its funny that you think porn is a bit problem, considering Christianity went through a lovely phase where you butchered every man woman and child in sight that wouldn't kneel to your god. Right after they had raped the women of course. They must have been watching a lot of pornography back then right?

      Shaun Swindon - 2013-04-25 08:15

Regardless of if Religion has its negatives. Everything has. Even yourself sir. All I am saying is that the way people treat each other in porn movies is not what I would recommend teaching our children when they eventually watch it. Boys weird views on girls is a part of the reason that the youth of today are so disfunctional.

People want to choose the degrading and are surprised to see what moral mess they are living in.

  • Leaproach TheKeeper - 2013-04-24 20:19

HELLOOOOOOOO........when last did you guys bother to access the internet? Access that MANY kids have on their BlackBerries for FREE in any case?

      Basil Clifford - 2013-04-25 08:30

Good point. Children have had free access to porn for years now. It's still going to be easier for them access pornography on their cellphones than it is from Top TV. So I don't understand the outcry myself. To reiterate a point made my many before me: don't like it, don't watch it, don't subscribe to it.

      Michael Savage - 2013-04-25 10:52

Plus if kids are going to have one on one fun with themselves in the bathroom, they're probably going to take a cell phone with them and not the tv ;-)

  • Mpho Leopeng - 2013-04-24 20:34

At least parents can monitor it unlike the internet.

  • Kenton Smith - 2013-04-24 21:01

Finally ICASA has seen the light, if people want it then they must have the choice to watch it. No one has the right to enforce their views on others regarding porn or any other matter. Well done ICASA.

  • Nico Ratsela - 2013-04-24 21:36

I'm sure that guy who stole panties on washing line will subscribe to this.

      Nico Van Der Merwe - 2013-04-25 10:36

      Problem solved I guess :)

  • Elinor Smalberger - 2013-06-22 16:12

Most children who are raped are perpetrated by adult family members.... So do you think we can expect an increase in these abhorrant peverted acts against them? May God help and protect our little ones! Censorship (?) Board approves it? I stupidly thought this board protected us against this sort of trash!
