Channel changes for TopTV, DStv

Cape Town – TopTV and DStv are undergoing changes to their channel line-up this month.

Channel24 has learnt that TopTV's 1KZN community TV channel, which was added to its bouquet just a year ago, is jumping from TopTV to DStv.

The channel will no longer be available on TopTV from the end of November, which comes as the pay-TV operator is experiencing a cash crunch and is looking for an investor with big pockets.

TopTV is, however, planning to add another new channel, Setanta Action, as from next week.

DStv adding more channels

Meanwhile DStv is losing the VH1 music channel this month and will be replacing it with the VH1 Classic channel. This channel was tested by MultiChoice two years ago, but at that time "didn't test well" according to the pay-TV company.

Besides adding VH1 Classic and 1KZN from 13 November, DStv will also be adding kykNET Musiek and Mzansi Music as local music channels, BlackbeltTV as a martial arts channel and the community television stations BayTV from Port Elizabeth and Dumisa.

All the new TV channels, besides VH1 Classic, will be available to DStv Premium and DStv Compact subscribers. The NatGeo Wild nature channel will be made available on the cheaper DStv Compact bouquet.

"We are excited with these new additions," Collins Khumalo, the CEO of MultiChoice South Africa said in a statement. "We believe they will add more value to our packages and give our customers more variety in entertainment."

"The addition of the three community television stations and the two additional music channels aims to provide our customers with a rich diversity of local content and forms part of our ongoing support of the development of the local television industry."

'A milestone to be celebrated'

TopTV didn't immediately have a media response to losing the 1KZN channel.

When 1KZN was asked about switching from TopTV to DStv, Themba Fazaki, the executive chairperson said that "this is indeed a milestone to be celebrated".

"The inclusion on DStv also offers an exciting opportunity to reflect the diversity and inclusivity of the people of KwaZulu/Natal," Fazaki said in his statement.

Edwin Mncwango, the executive director said that "being on DStv gives 1KZN the unique opportunity to grow as a station."

Oh yesss, VH1 classic I'm looking forward to the likes of Earth Wind and Fire, Aretha Franklin, Franky Beverly and Chaka Khan.

VH1 is the only channel with bearable music!!!!

      stuart.grobbelaar - 2012-11-01 13:41

Agree! Trace only plays gangster music and MTV replaced music with Teenage Cribs, Parties, Cars and Girls years ago! VH1 was the only channel that played MUSIC!

      adrian.tyler - 2012-11-01 13:44

      Possibly the ONLY music channel!

      cheryl.roets - 2012-11-01 13:58

totally agree - i am very miffed but this is typical of DSTV!

Oy, @kabelo! Who said anything about politics? If you pay for a service, you are allowed to complain if that service isn't what you expected. Boob!

TopTV has Kerrang and it is brilliant. Pity they might go bust. But if they could get more subscribers they could make it and improve content (which is not too bad IMHO).

  • stephen.redford.16 - 2012-11-01 13:41

I dont understand this at all. At what point did the DSTV subscriber base ask for "more diversity" by shutting down channels to get "channels that didn't test well"

      dragonfire47 - 2012-11-01 15:10

Esp when they said there's no market for the sci fi channel, commie ass licking scum

      DraganTrenk - 2012-11-01 20:24

They got that for MAHALA and it is politically correct-check the BOARD at DSTV. Next addition is going to be watching E-TOLL TV Live(cost them nothing.I preserve right to copyright this idea,DSTV!!!)

While they are adding variety they must also change the play list on music channel 131. Tired of listening to one play list every day.

  • cheryl.roets - 2012-11-01 14:01

why o why DSTV are you changing the only music channel most people like with something that did not test well previously????

  • manamela.moshe - 2012-11-01 14:15

  • nicolas.francisco.3 - 2012-11-01 14:47

Oh hell no! VH1 is the best music channel on DStv. Multichoice is making a big mistake...

      jack.sparrowhawk.79 - 2012-11-02 13:21

At least TopTV has Kerrang! Just hope the company don't go bust...

  • dragonfire47 - 2012-11-01 15:04

And still no science channel which btw forms part of discovery networks, dstv is the anc\s bitch and doing very well in keeping the masses uneducated, can you imagine if they actually learnt something instead of the mindless trash we are exposed to day after frigging day

      jack.sparrowhawk.79 - 2012-11-02 13:22

Which TopTV has, Discovery Science is awesome. Just hope TopTV survives...

  • gary.dalton.75286 - 2012-11-01 15:32

DSTV can gladly take 1kzn...now that is just CRAP beyond Crap...community tv in south africa is very bad....still long way to go..

  • freddie.jones.58367 - 2012-11-01 15:49

"We are excited with these new additions," Collins Khumalo, the CEO of MultiChoice South Africa said. Well, this paying DSTV Premium customer isn't at all excited by this announcement.

      DraganTrenk - 2012-11-01 20:02

Collins Khumalo is talking nonsense-as uusual.Old saying:"Every Gipsy glorified horse that is about to sell"

  • lielie.smit - 2012-11-01 16:08

Sucks big time!!! I only watch about 4 channels, the rest is crap, and now they take one away. If it wasn't for hubby's sport I would gladly end my subscription, but nou ja, a man and his sport and his remote..... lol

  • heizenschneizen - 2012-11-01 16:49

Why Why Why on earth would DSTV take away VH1? It's 1 of 2 music channels I watch. Sucks big time

      DraganTrenk - 2012-11-01 19:59

To many "job creations" employed at DSTV-balancing books made them endlessly repeat same sh.t over and over shamelessly,"creating" NEW channels by repeats from the other channels, buying leftovers on the market, increasing advertising that often they look as SABC etc...etc... Are they redeployed ex-SABC management?! If anybody brings this monopoly down-I will sign subscription 100 years upfront. South Africans are the most gullible citizens on the Earth(no offence, please. We are DOOMED!)

      jack.sparrowhawk.79 - 2012-11-02 13:24

Come over to TopTV, it has Kerrang. More subscribers means it will survive and be able to improve its content, (which has been getting better recently - brand new Walking Dead (S3), Copper)

  • Keiron Dacey - 2012-11-01 17:32

if i wanted local content I'd watch the crap on sabc. how about Dstv adds some decent channels instead of the rubbish they are so excited about. even the new movie channels are a waste of time. there's nothing new on them. its just the same movies repeated in an endless loop.

All you people are moaning but did you even give TopTV a try? My favourites are Kerrang which is brilliant, Discovery Science (brillliant), FX (with brand spanking new Walking Dead). Top Explore, Top History, Natura have some pretty good doumentaries. Silver shows some awesome arthouse movies, Showtime has horror. I know I sound like a TopTV salesman, but everyone moans how they don't have sports but how can they get sports if Multichoice has exclusive rights to sports for the next few years? More subscribers for TopTV would improve finances, giving them the ability to improve content and possibly even grab sports rights from Multichoice when they go to tender again. But you continue moaning but don't try doing something about it...
