Cape Town - The well-received, well-liked and highly successful Come Dine With Me South Africa on BBC Entertainment (DStv 120) has been cancelled.

Come Dine With Me SA won't see a 4th season but BBC Worldwide says it will make a new locally produced format show for South Africa.

The first two seasons were well-liked, although viewers started complaining about over-commercialisation of the third season with sponsors and ads which became too intrusive.

Rapid Blue produced the three seasons of Come Dine With Me South Africa, with the format belonging to ITV Studios, with exceptionally high production values which delighted viewers and South African TV critics alike.

"Come Dine With Me South Africa was a huge hit for BBC Entertainment and we are very proud of the series," says Joel Churcher, the vice president and general manager Africa for BBC Worldwide.

"We feel the time is right to take this experience and seek new opportunities for a fresh, innovative local format for audiences to enjoy. We are committed to investing in the very best quality programming for our channels and are actively looking at all opportunities," says Churcher.

And not before time. A shocking series. Compared to its British and Australian counterparts, the South African show was appalling: amateurish, embarrassing, awkward. Good riddance!

Was fun/cringe a minute viewing...we are a dysfunctional national family, show reminded me, so much still needs to be done..

@Janine Roberts Owen. Do you have a problem with gays? GET OVER IT!!!!!!!

      Dave Kent - 2014-04-23 09:47

Always someone who finds a hair in their food. So corny!

      Julie - 2014-04-23 09:54

Christopher, I agree 100% with you and would also like to add COMMON!

      Darren Cooper - 2014-04-23 12:21

@Jessica, do you have a problem with people that have a problem with gays? Just like you, all are entitled to their views, prejudices or whatever. You may have oversimplified her statement. I read it more along the lines of the recipe component, 1 man, 1 woman, 1 gay, 1 black, 1 white, 1 other. To engineered when maybe a more random mix of people would have gone down a little better.

Jessica, Only with those who can take out an eye when they're talking...

    Kommin people cooking.... Always entertaining!

  • JamesBlacksmith - 2014-04-23 08:53

What? Food, wine, conversation? I think this show is for single folk that don't get invited out to dinner parties.

  • NickvanGraan - 2014-04-23 08:54

Looks like the comments differ slightly from the trumpeting story! Never watched it so I wouldn't know.

  • Gary Evans - 2014-04-23 08:56

pathetic series. Only managed to watch half of an episode. Most of the people on the show are common. Show NO class at all.

  • sbo.kubeka - 2014-04-23 09:00

What a pity, I really liked it and the quality was very good.

      Olive Gouws - 2014-04-23 09:40

you must refer to the over seas program, because the SA program was utter rubish. Would like to know how these fools were chosen

  • Bryan De Bruin - 2014-04-23 09:01

Most embarrassing piece of rubbish ever to come out of SA!!!

  • Janine Filmer - 2014-04-23 09:08

Thank goodness - it was terrible. On one episode there was a woman who was asked to tell the viewers something that they did not know about her and she revealed (with a big smile) that she ate her own toenails! I cringed at the thought that this programme might be shown overseas.

      Paul Mark Maarman - 2014-04-23 09:31

...hahahhahaha!! ok, that one takes the cake, the beer and the whiskey..sies much!

  • Gerald Majola - 2014-04-23 09:20

one or 2 episodes were OK, but the rest were rubbish and the cooking was embarrassing to say the least. I will never forget the dronk gat chick from Milnerton who puked, yet Herschelle Gibbs still wanted to bone her aftetr he saw the show

  • Derek Less - 2014-04-23 09:27

Most of u embarrassed co it so close to home. Your homes. Reflects the reality of South Africa. I've only watched the uk series and I would be very embarrassed as a Brit for that eye on Britain - brainless blondes, filthy homes and drunks.

      Norbert Skosana - 2014-04-23 11:48

Derek I am low class and I am even embasrsed that these people they choose. Nasty and bad.

  • Christopher Booise - 2014-04-23 09:43

Good riddance! Some of the people on there was very annoying.

  • waynemenator - 2014-04-23 10:02

  • Gray Braatvedt - 2014-04-23 10:05

"The well-received, well-liked and highly successful Come Dine With Me South Africa" ... I've never seen a bigger amount of crap on the TV. Tried watching one episode, lasted about 10 minutes and never watched it again. Good riddance.

  • Margaret Hattingh - 2014-04-23 10:13

Good riddance...Embarrassing! People who enjoyed it, must be on that same level...can't please everyone...thankfully we have a fast moving remote

  • Olive Gouws - 2014-04-23 10:20

Yippee, hoera. Lasted 4 series to long. This program and "diners" a total disgrace for SA.

  • ShoSho - 2014-04-23 10:22

It was funny!!! 'you're a comedian and you're not even funny!' 'Yeah? Well you're a teacher and you're not even intelligent!' I liked it, I enjoyed the shenanigans!!! Like that guy who put a worm in his fish soup to make get the host lower scores.

  • Melanie Pienaar - 2014-04-23 10:58

I love the show!!!! And have seen every episode of every season of the British series, and find that there are also really common and embarrassing people in the UK too. You get them in all walks of life, in every country. It's not limited to SA only!

  • Freddie Jones - 2014-04-23 11:05

It was NOT well-received or well-liked by me or anyone in my house. Good riddance.

  • Riana Bruyns-Lombard - 2014-04-23 11:25

Well, I loved it! How boring the show would have been if it were 4 prim and proper alike individuals. Yes, I cringed most of the time, but no more than I do with watching the British version! It makes for entertaining TV... Isn't that why we tune in in the first place?

  • Louise-Roger Higham - 2014-04-23 11:36

Biggest load of cheap acting, not going to be missed by us

  • Matt Rae - 2014-04-23 11:48

We don't understand proper cooking, its embarrassing to see a braai compaired to the Europeans cuisine

  • Erna Westdyk - 2014-04-23 11:52

The well-received, well-liked and highly successful Come Dine With Me South Africa. Couldn't have been so well received, well liked or successful!! Isn't a touch on the British format.

  • Nonkululeko Dlomo - 2014-04-23 11:58

I loved the show so sad that its being cancelled.

  • Tracy Trevorrow - 2014-04-23 12:19

About time, its actually embarrassing to see how they carry on....trying to pretend (some of them) that they have class. Do me a favour. What a relief.

  • Darren Cooper - 2014-04-23 12:33

It is not meant to reflect a societies norms etc. It is a mix of people thrown together for entertainment. Who wants to watch a bunch of air hair lair people scoffing Michelin Star chow. Let us see the "shut the front door" & stroke the cat to music types, its funny. The sarcky comments of the narrator were brilliant And the lousy food that the contestants were convinced was going to win them the loot boggled the mind. Chill out guys, its didn't claim to be high brow TV

  • Leonard Joubert - 2014-04-23 13:13

I watched it once and thought to myself, what must the rest of the world think when they see this rubbish. I was ashamed, Big Time. Where do they get these people. It was never about the ( Dining ) ie Food but all about these bad mannered ugly people that are mostly drunk. Bad Bad Bad.

  • Sheila Alexander - 2014-04-23 13:22

Biggest lot of rubbish!! Highly embarrassing!! Good riddance. Please don't make a local version. SA is capable of far better.

  • Donovan Udeman - 2014-04-23 14:12

was also very rehearsed I felt, always that one very rude over the top character!!! British version much better

  • Hazey Tom - 2014-04-24 00:17

I'm glad this show is over, I'm a black girl but I was very embarrassed by the way some of my 'brothers and sisters' behaved on the show.

  • Phran Kรจ - 2014-07-07 21:38

My partnr and I love the show, from all the walks of life and all the different countries. I think you all need to pull those giant size carrots out of your behinds ad remember that this show is not and never has been about class. Its Bout bringing different characters together and watching amateurs cook for their amateur counterparts. I am a chef and have worked for the supposedly classiest yacht owners in the South of France in a galley the size of a match box! Its entertainment people, Jeez!! Get a life and dont take things so seriously!

  • Jeannette Capper - 2014-11-02 16:52

Totally agree. Watching Series2 Episode3 and one aspiring cook just came on the series to get TV coverage and critisise every other person!(Dogs, candles etc!!) What an irritating woman!!!! No wonder it was cancelled-just not suited to the South African ethos!!!
