DStv adds 2 new channels, new bouquet

2013-03-19 13:03
Thinus Ferreira
Cape Town - MultiChoice has announced that it will be creating a new, cheaper DStv bouquet while simultaneously adding two new channels to its existing line-up.

New bouquet DStv Family will be launched on 9 April, while new channels Fox Entertainment and kykNET & kie will be joining DStv's line-up.

The DStv Family bouquet will offer 45 channels, 17 of which have not been available on what DStv refers to as "lower bouquets" before. The price of the bouquet will cost R175 per month.

So far, Fox Entertainment has only been available on On Digital Media's (ODM) TopTV platform for the past two and a half years and offers highly acclaimed hit TV shows soon after the US airdate such as Falling Skies, The Walking Dead, as well as buzzworthy new series Da Vinci's Demons and reality show Being Mandela.

Fox Entertainment, which will be broadcast on DStv channel 125, will only be available on the DStv Premium bouquet and will be available as a new HD channel to Premium subscribers with an HD PVR decoder.

Fox Entertainment leaving TopTV?

Separate media enquiries were made to TopTV as well as Fox International Channels Africa (FIC Africa), which runs Fox Entertainment as a pay-TV TV channel in Africa to shed light on whether Fox Entertainment will still be available on the TopTV line-up.

FIC Africa, which runs a trio of Fox channels on TopTV – including Fox Entertainment – declined to comment on the Fox channel development.

When asked for comment on Fox now joining DStv too, TopTV told Channel24 that they were not "aware of any moves in this regard".

kykNET's branching out

Meanwhile it seems that M-Net has now created a "rerun" kykNET channel of sorts for DStv, a second-tier version of the original channel which will make a version of kykNET with older library titles available on the kykNET & kie channel.

With the DStv Family bouquet, Afrikaans DStv subscribers will now get access to kykNET TV content, but in a time-lapse fashion after it has been on kykNET.

kykNET & kie will become available on the new DStv Family bouquet to give subscribers on a cheaper bouquet access to kykNET content, and will also be added to the DStv Premium and DStv Compact bouquets.

The new channel will air kykNET's premium shows like Villa Rosa, Binneland, Toks en Tjops, eNuus and Dagbreek.

New magazine show

"It's been sad that several Afrikaans families due to financial pressure didn't have access to kykNET," Karen Meiring, M-Net's director for Afrikaans channels said in a separate statement.

"With kykNET & kie it's all changing. We're looking forward to becoming a friend in the homes of more Afrikaans viewers," Meiring continued to say.

Shows such as Agter Elke Man, kykNET's first commissioned Afrikaans drama series Song vir Katryn and the comedy Alie Barber will be aired on kykNET & kie.

kykNET will also be launching a new local magazine show Kollig on kykNET & kie.

They do have, its called "Pawn Stars"

      Zip Reeper - 2013-03-19 21:55

the porn you'll find on the parliament channel. all very porno.

      Jono Qmann - 2013-03-20 08:34

it was on supersport the other day...the bulls got hammered hard!

      Mattewis Kat - 2013-03-20 12:35

So after the ID channel, DSTV has now managed to obtain another channel that was the exclusive domain of TopTV! So while aforementioned are battling it out to get the rights to porn, they're losing some of their family channels to Multichoice (and discontinuing the rest). TopTV really sucks! If Multichoice really wanted to prove a point, they would compile a bouquet with all their channels, but only excluding the sport channels! If they can provide this at say R100 p/m more than the TopTV premium drivel, aforementioned will be history before their porn application is over!

      Geoff Thompson - 2013-04-03 12:34

I don't know if the DSTV additions are going to be an improvement. Perhaps they should do something about the complaints they get on a very regular basis about the stuff they show now. Most of it is same same and a lot of it is obviously put together on a very small budget. Try taking the in-house advertising out for starters, that would help!

  • Wicus Van Den Berg - 2013-03-19 13:18

Finally some good news from NoChoice..

      Freddie Miller - 2013-03-19 14:09

I just came back from a month in Thailand and really enjoyed Fox Entertainment there. Good news indeed.

      squeegee.pilot - 2013-03-20 09:52

So already some are jumping ship to get away from the sinking and stinking porn tv...

  • Ronald Utenhage - 2013-03-19 13:20

2 New DSTV Channels..loosely translated as ...move same old repeats to a extra channel..nothing exciting or fresh.

      Duncan Scott Bennie - 2013-03-19 13:27

Adding fox means we qualify to get their shows much sooner, where we had to wait ages for them in the past, or did not get them at all due to fox channel on TOPTV holding the only rights

      Sandra Rennie - 2013-04-10 15:56

Sort out the repeats on 120 BBC Entertainment and the rest, then give us new Channels. Strictly come Dancing was held in 2011. Had I not seen Harry Judd from McFly on Sky News as the 2011 winner I would have thought I was watching the latest. What a bunch of crooks DSTV you are !!!!

  • Mafa Smith - 2013-03-19 13:24

Dstv pliz improve the content of your programs,im tired of watching same documentaries everyday,im paying for god's sake

      Peter Hlongwane - 2013-03-19 13:32

Correct Mafa Smith, its a day robbery they must improve

      Dumi Zulu - 2013-03-19 14:34

I go full the first 10 days or so of the month then downgrade. I would have watched everything they have to show for the month.

  • Mari Theologo - 2013-03-19 13:34

Doesn't help Dstv adding when they show so many repeats!!! Ridiculous!!! Rather have the option of paying for the channels we want to watch!! Have a cheaper option to watch channel 101 and let us pay for extra channels!! Now just to have 101 we have to pay such a high subscription! That's why so many people are canceling!!!

  • Saad Sheikh Ibragim - 2013-03-19 13:35

i think its good to poor people 2 get cheap dstv cuz they will be able to watch whats habening the world evryday!!

      Bob Wowzer - 2013-03-19 14:20

This offering still won't replace the free channels so the poor will still be exposed to McGuyver reruns and quality SABC News propaganda.

      bonham.butt - 2013-03-19 16:03

And hopefully there will be an educational channel to teach you how to spell.

      Robin Smith - 2013-03-19 19:50

      lol butt

      Granville Ormerod - 2013-03-20 12:07

You should subscribe to the Education channel and tune in when they air the spelling section...

  • Brian Tebogo Mogotsi - 2013-03-19 13:52

A better development would be to let one pick only the channels they are interested in.

      Bob Wowzer - 2013-03-19 14:16

From a marketing point of view, usually an increased level of customization means higher per-unit costs. They'll be offering some absolutely crap/unpopular channels like Rhema or the Parliament channel as optional and only having a handful of people subscribing to them. They have to make a profit on every channel otherwise investors will start asking questions.

      John Wilkinson - 2013-03-19 14:20

I couldn't agree more. I cannot stand the way the DSTV ignore the fact that selling each individual channel on a daily basis is a viable business model, it is simply a matter of pricing. Have an availability fee and then price each channel according to demand? forecast popularity. But they refuse to listen and refuse to comment, the above suggestion is simply ignored and they insist upon the most awkward and non rewarding bouquets. Crazy!

      Brian Tebogo Mogotsi - 2013-03-20 08:51

Yep. Their grand plan is to shove 500 channels down your throat, knowing very well that only 9 are entertaining!

  • Kgosi Orapeleng Taele - 2013-03-19 14:15

Bafana, the only news24 reader that always cracks me. You're a legend

  • Dewald P Montgomery - 2013-03-19 14:15

How about a bouquet like this: (1) Mnet OR Mnet Series (2) NatGeo OR NatGeo Wild (3) CI OR Discovery ID (4) Discovery (5) SuperSport 1 (6) SuperSport 2 (7) KykNet (8) CNN OR Sky (9) One Comic Channel of your choice (10) One Music Channel of your choice. (11) SonyMax OR CBS Reality Yes. Something like this. Without MagicWorld. Without AfricaMagic. Because they are already on offer with all the OTHER SuperSport channels in the cheap bouquets.

      Vin Savage - 2013-03-21 15:06

Not difficult to figure out why that is - the cheap bouquets are designed for the same leeches that get free houses and free electricity and free water and and and.....

  • Denton Estment - 2013-03-19 14:18

When is DSTv going to allow subscribers to make up their own selection of which channels they want and pay accordingly, intead of being forced/dictated to what they can whatch.

      Dewald P Montgomery - 2013-03-19 14:37

They won't. They need Premium subscriptions to subsidise the cheap options. The need someone to pay for the rubbish they broadcast on the MW and AM channels.

  • Luke Bezuidenhout - 2013-03-19 14:19

I canceled my DSTV some months ago, spend the money on internet services and down load / stream content from the net. I surely don't miss the Repeat Giant aka Multichoice on my monthly Budget, and I really don't miss their secondhand content on my TV.

      Dewald P Montgomery - 2013-03-19 14:34

One problem - new rules in the US require FBI to verify all US PayPal accounts after a certain date. You will need a US ID and proof of address to retain a US PayPal account. Which you need to pay for Hulu, since you need to link EntroPay to your US PayPal account as they don't take SA credit cards. Not sure it's going to affect Netflix, though.

      iNJBL - 2013-03-19 15:32

      Dewald P Montgomery - 2013-03-19 15:47

Utorrent is technically fine. Just don't "seed" (the capitalists will came after you for distributing...) People, why the 3 thumbs down? I SUPPORT the concept of "DIY". I'm just pointing out that soon we may be stuck with DSTV once more.

  • Nigel Booyse - 2013-03-19 14:29

how about a bouquet with sport channels!! SS1,2,3 ????

      Christiaan Booysen - 2013-03-19 15:26

      You will still pay R620!!!

  • Rainbow Nation - 2013-03-19 14:34

Why must africa magic ect.. be include in our packages. Why cant africa channels be put on a seperate package like the indian boquet. The new family boquet is boring and not even worth the change. ITs the same scenario, pay R620 or watch the crappy channels.

  • fumo.fumoffu - 2013-03-19 14:35

FOX only now. Already in Season 3 for Walking Dead and waiting for Falling Skies Season 3. I dont Need to worry about these Channels. If only they unbundled their Content and gave a choice - Thats the magic word Choice - There is no choice with Multichoice/dstv.

  • lablue.phoenix - 2013-03-19 14:35

Will Fox SA have The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad? If so, WOOOHOOO!

      Jack Sparrowhawk - 2013-03-19 14:51

I've got TopTV and it looks like you're getting the same Fox as we have, ie Fox Africa. (Check out Fox Africa's facebook page, they said it there). Simpons is on Fox but Family Guy and American Dad (and Cleveland Show) are on FX.

      Jack Sparrowhawk - 2013-03-19 14:52

Oh and Walking Dead premieres on FX (2 days behing US premiere and in Season 3 already) so you guys are going to be a bit behind on that.

      Jack Sparrowhawk - 2013-03-19 14:55

      FX also being on TopTV...

      lablue.phoenix - 2013-03-19 16:00

Maybe I should switch to TopTV then :)

  • Bruce Wilson - 2013-03-19 14:39

just another attempt at making it look like they are offering subscribers a choice, when they are keeping all the best channels out, so people have to pay for premium to get those channels. they know there is no competition, so they dont care!

  • Jack Sparrowhawk - 2013-03-19 14:54

DSTV is getting Fox Africa which is currently on TopTV. See the FoxAfrica facebook page for confirmation: http://www.facebook.com/foxtvafrica?fref=ts

  • Steven Macheke - 2013-03-19 15:02

i knew that we compact subscribers will be overlooked by multichoice

  • galmzala - 2013-03-19 15:52

no fox channel on DSTV Compact

      Dewald P Montgomery - 2013-03-19 16:29

No Fox channel either for Premium subscribers without a HD PVR. Much like BoxOffice. They're already differentiating between Premium Class 1 (those with PVR) and Premium Class 2 (those without PVR). They're just not saying it out aloud.

  • Charlie Reddy - 2013-03-19 15:55

    when does it commence?

  • Vernon Meakin - 2013-03-19 16:08

And they are raising the monthly subs once again.

  • Gail Gradidge - 2013-03-19 17:23

Just another excuse to show us reruns of programmes we have seen over and over again. And what's with having a Food Channel when so many other channels have food programmes, BBC Lifestyle is rotten with Food programmes. All Food programmes to be kept in the Food channel!!! I am on my last nerve with DSTV!!!!

  • PeterJJhb - 2013-03-19 18:47

U people complain complain complain. Man....

  • Johnny Potatoes - 2013-03-19 19:50

I cancelled my DSTV subscription 5 years ago. Do it - you won't regret it.

  • Bizarro Jerri - 2013-03-19 23:27

Fox Entertainment should really be called the 'Groundhog Day' channel. "Oh, look it's Scrubs Season 5...again" Ironic that the only thing that keeps this channel alive is a show (an extremely derivative one at that)about zombies...

  • Stefan Breedt - 2013-03-20 00:45

stil no decent channels or ss1 and 2 on this new bouquet. They discriminate against all rugby viewers

  • Ilse Krige - 2013-03-20 06:10

Please add Supersport 1 to a budget bouquet ... as if they ever will!

  • Fanie Nagel - 2013-03-20 06:34

We Want to pick our own bouquets please.!!

  • Warwick Railton - 2013-03-20 06:45

The history channel show no shows regarding history, just pawn stars, ice road truckers, and storage wars…wtf?? DSTV is not value for money, repeat after repeat and don’t let me get started on the bond movies……………

      Primrose Xoliswa Mzilikazi - 2013-03-20 10:04

with u there Warwick, repeats so sick of them, how about this month Mission Impossible 1,2 and 3, every %(^*$ day, its rediculous.....

  • William George Lorentz - 2013-03-20 07:02

I subscribed for Rugby and cricket... I seldom watch anything else... How about a 'bouquet' of sports without having to subscribe to the 'burn the money' option! Pretty Pleeeeezzzzzz! Hello - is there anyone there or listening... who cares?

  • Pixie86 - 2013-03-20 07:05

subscription to dstv is voluntary so stop coming here and moaning about dstv.

      Pitso Dlungwana - 2013-03-20 08:50

      do we have a choice?

      Guy Snelling - 2013-03-20 09:23

I agree. If you don't like DSTV, then don't subscribe. From the comments here it seems that there are other choices via the internet. Alternatively find something else to do rather than watch TV.

  • Pixie86 - 2013-03-20 07:07

subscription to dstv is voluntary so stop coming here and moaning about dstv.

      Antoinette Jordaan - 2013-03-20 23:57

Yes, it's voluntary - but one would expect when you pay the amounts we are that you would actually get quality for it. Unfortunately, that's not what's happening. I guess you are either not a subscriber, or then just very happy with watching the same stuff over and over?

  • lois.lloyd.1238 - 2013-03-20 07:36

It's not about the number of channels but rather the quality of them.

  • Gary De Sousa - 2013-03-20 08:28

I thought the competition commission stated that dstv had to supply channels on a pay per channel basis and not a fixed bouquet

  • Sonwabile Sony Antonie - 2013-03-20 08:52

Hoping the Fox channel is the entertainment one and not the news service. Dont want those bigot journalists on my tv

  • Kevin Williams - 2013-03-20 10:30

I guess they have to at least make as if they are giving the ignorant "more". And believe me, I am one of them. We are so spoiled for choice..Which one should we choose, Top Tv, DSTV or DSTV Top TV. Top TV , DSTV or DSTV , Top TV. What a joke....I think the competition commision should fine MULTICHOICE for collusion, and pricefixing

  • Tsokotla Cafu - 2013-03-20 12:23

DSTV should create a flexi bouquet where: - we should be allowed to choose the channels we want - currently they are offering a whole lot but we dont watch all of them and have to pay the full price - not fair - or be billed according to how much time we spend on all these channels - they dont bill us for all their repeats

      Antoinette Jordaan - 2013-03-20 23:59

heheheheehehe - if they don't bill us for the repeats, there's not much we need to pay for!

  • Gordon Hart - 2013-03-20 13:33

A synonym for Prime is first. Prime Time is thus accepted as being the first time a program is aired on television. This is certainly not the case on most of the DSTV channels during 6-10pm which is commonly accepted as being prime time. Some of the programs that they broadcast in "Prime Time" were prime time programs in 2001. This is borne out by the dates on the cheques shown in Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Some of the young people appearing on that program are probably grandparents by now!!! Topgear, Hells Kitchen, Chasing Classic Cars, Weakest Link,American Chopper the list goes on and on of repeat after repeat - surely there have been more recent recordings of these show- DSTV are probably keeping those for after the turn of the century. Why not broadcast last years Super 15, it would be cheaper and might fool some of the people.

  • Carol McIntyre Strauss - 2013-03-20 14:08

Please stop with the old programs and re-runs, so tired of it, and it's daylight robbery!!!

  • Danie Posthumus - 2013-03-21 08:31

Couldn't repeat all the crap on the existing channels - needs 2 more. What a scam.

  • Ben - 2013-03-21 08:36

Infact I really love that additional two channels, may God give you more wisdom to add more and more.By Ben

  • Phiwase Shabalala - 2013-03-21 11:38

Doesn't make or mean any difference.

  • Ivan Van Der Merwe - 2013-03-21 20:07

Wow and that warrants the increase in fees, but all we will see are repeats, repeats, repeats.

  • Mike Suter - 2013-03-21 22:13

Yahoooooooooo more repetes .....Now we can watch more of the same over and over..Add nauseous.

  • Anne-Marie Taylor - 2013-03-25 13:09

What you fail to point out, is that the normal KykNet channel will now NOT be available on any other bouquet anymore, except Premium. So we are not winning anything. We are basically buggered, because I am not going to pay for Premium AND there will be no KykNet on any cheaper bouquet anymore. That is really a low blow DSTv!
