Cape Town – MultiChoice is upgrading high definition (HD) versions of the standard definition channels SuperSport 5 and SuperSport 6, and is adding SuperSport 8 as a new TV channel next week.

SuperSport 5 and SuperSport 6 will both be added as HD channels from Tuesday, 23 July when the satellite pay-TV operator will also grow the SuperSport channel offering by launching a new SuperSport 8 TV channel in South Africa in standard definition.

SuperSport 5 HD or SS5HD (DStv 215) will focus on motorsports, boxing, swimming and athletics and will act as an overflow channel.

SuperSport 6 HD or SS6HD (DStv 216) will carry international soccer leagues such as the German Bundesliga, Spanish La Liga and the Italian Serie A.

SuperSport says the channel will also complement the existing soccer channels SuperSport 3 HD (SS3HD - DStv 213) , and SuperSport 4 HD (SS4HD - 214) which carries the English Premier League and the South African Premier Soccer League.

SuperSport 8 (DStv 208) will carry overflow live events from SuperSport 1 and SuperSport 2 and will broadcast content such as university athletics series and school sports.

The new channel will be exclusive to DStv Premium subscribers.

"The addition of new HD channels speak to our commitment to provide our viewers with the best available content," says Happy Ntshingila, SuperSport CEO in a statement.

"With an impressive line-up of leagues including the PSL, SuperSport will be showcasing the best international leagues on this growing and highly demanded HD platform."

The HD versions of these channels are only available to Premium DStv subscribers with PVR decoders. Premium subscribers with SD decoders will still have access to the channels.
* Multichoice and Channel24 are part of the Naspers group.

Why am not impressed I'm a dstv extra sub meaning those channels will mean nothing to me besides they should be thinking of adding SS1 and SS2 on dstv extra/compact R380 is to much money I'd also want 2 watch cricket n live rugby

      GayAtheistEffUN24 - 2013-07-17 11:02

They should really offer us the option of not wanting these channels. Why should i pay for channels with content i do not like... eg. sport and gospel channels

      Fredster69 - 2013-07-17 11:25

I agree, I don't want to watch programs on evolution and thank goodness, no gay content

      Donald Muller - 2013-07-17 13:11

      @Fredster69 you are d**k head!!

      stormer208 - 2013-07-17 15:34

No Donald, there's nothing wrong with not wanting gay content. Just the mere thought of having to watch 2 men or 2 woman kissing is just plain freaking me out. Not to mention going further. But I agree we should pay only for what we need. I do not want all these foreign channels that I can't understand.

Donald ~ leave me out of it

Eventually they will force you to get HD because there will be nothing left on the normal Sp channels. They offerc Sp 3 which they know is not as much viewed as Sp 1. Most of the rugby is on this channel. There are no proper competition threfore they can hike the prices and if you want to watch you have to pay.

      Jay Moodley - 2013-12-20 08:40

      Well said Jacques...

  • Willem Bouwer - 2013-07-17 10:56

Pathetic, they're just going to move sport from one channel to another and show things we already see in HD... Give us something in return for losing ESPN...

  • Klipkop de Groote - 2013-07-17 11:48

I give up, these idiots will never understand what we want and that not all of us earn R200k per month. And another thing, why does you equipment break all the time?!

  • Zoheb Hassan - 2013-07-17 12:32

No more 230 and 231 and replace it with school sports lol really? Dstv thinks we are soo dumb

  • Lois Lloyd - 2013-07-17 15:56

Most of us just want SS1 and 2 with a few other entertainment options. We don't want hundreds of channels of which we only watch a few. There are more Nigerian channels than local (although I must admit the local channels are generally garbage)! We want quality and not quantity- listen to the people please!

  • Mintesinot G Michael - 2013-07-17 19:54

    They should offer me

  • Boipelo Ntsepe - 2013-07-18 18:19

Dstv sucks. They just want us to pay for what we don't want. Let us sport fans pay for sport, gospel fans pay for gospel and so forth. Sky in England does it why shouldn't we.

  • Atewogboye Ojo - 2013-07-18 19:01

When are those channels going to be available in nigeria. We only have HD1-HD3 in nigeria

      Atewogboye Ojo - 2014-05-07 21:59

When are the new HD CHANNELS HD4 TO HD7 going to be available in nigeria . Why the reap off DSTV.

  • Jay Moodley - 2013-12-20 08:38

Just something else that they think we want, not giving us channels we want.Who asked for these extra channels????just more channels where they can have more adverts!!!!!
