Dave van Vuuren wins Idols 7

2011-10-04 21:04
Johannesburg - Dave van Vuuren is your new Idol.

The 21-year-old from Johannesburg clinched the title after a 90-minute Idols finale at the Mosaïek Teatro in Fairlands on Tuesday.

Van Vuuren, who received 50.49% of the public vote, beat out 29-year-old Mark Haze from Cape Town. M-Net said in a press release that this is the smallest voting margin in SA Idols history.

M-Net channel head Pierre Cloete assured the media at the press conference that the votes were checked and rechecked numerous times, specifically because of how small the difference was between votes for each finalist.

Van Vuuren thanked South Africa for the support, saying: "I can't wait to show you music from the soul."

The Idols winner's debut single, Hall of Mirrors, is available for download on omusic.com

Listen to it here.

Can't believe that someone who sings flat, cant\'t hold a note and has the stage personality of a slap chip is the best SA has to offer. Pathetic.

      Werner - 2011-10-04 22:45

Idols has lost its core meaning and purpose. It's no longer a TALENT show. It's become a question of who the 16-year old girls want to see every week. Please, please, please, not another Idols season. I remember the ad for the new season (the current one) airing shortly after the previous season was completed, thinking to myself 'what, another season already?' As if, in the space of a few months, South Africa had suddenly been injected with talent again. As I said, the show has long ago lost its intended purpose. Now it's just a matter of making money off suckers.

      Kitkat24 - 2011-10-05 08:48

Thandi thats why you are a good for nothing attemp of a human race; feeling bad that you and your family did not make it and stood a chance to win the goodies. sis on you. best man won so just deal with it.

      chantelle.lyons - 2011-10-05 09:17

Oh and you can do better....please sign up for Idols next year so that we can have a laugh lol

      GeeBee - 2011-10-05 09:41

I agree. Dave was in most of the competition very flat. At the odd time he wasn't bad but overall not very good. Mark has a much better range than Dave and should do well. I am sure he has already been approached by some record labels. All the bets Mark I thought you were the better one.

      Thandi - 2011-10-05 11:23

@Kitkat24 - literacy classes are provided by most schools - try it.

  • rowen.loretz - 2011-10-04 21:14

Both contestants deserve the title...definitely the best Idols SA has had thusfar in the compo.

  • gaharaa - 2011-10-04 21:16

I know right? He constantly looked like he was constipated and people might have laughed at him in a karaoke bar. Sometimes you have to wonder what these people see in these so called "idols". The complete difference in talent between the finalists was so so evident and yet here we go with another failed, loser musician that this show seems to produce. At least give the talented the chance to progress. Shame Mark, good luck. Create a kickass group!

      Thandi - 2011-10-04 21:24

The two are like chalk and cheese - Mark is in a league of his own and I am sure he will go far. Dave I fear will quietly slip into obscurity, where he belongs.

      Adrian - 2011-10-05 07:23

You can blame it on all those 13 to 16 year old kids with their BB phones on contract. What else are they going to use their airtime on. Mark doesn't fit their profile looks and age wise. Why do you think Freddy lasted so long.

      donkerhond - 2011-10-05 10:02

Mark already has a band called 12th Avenue. Support them when they start gigging again

  • JustMe - 2011-10-04 21:18

And Mark will be the more successful of the two! The only winner of Idols so far who has been successful, has been Elvis Blue!

      Marius - 2011-10-04 21:21

      Durasmart - 2011-10-05 05:41

      @Marius. Heinz who?

      Daemos1 - 2011-10-05 07:49

      tomato sauce

  • Ettienne Pieterse - 2011-10-04 21:21

    Well Done Dave!!!

  • LuLuBug - 2011-10-04 21:36

    aaaag nooit!

  • Lynn - 2011-10-04 21:37

Another rigged result..... DONT come with the f*cking excuse of the votes being stuffed up like with Jason and that OTHER. Idols in SA is SUCH a farse. At least Elvis Blue is doing something for the community - small fee for the ticket and a blanket for an Entrance Fee for his Charities.....

      Lionel - 2011-10-04 22:03

I find it weird that wikipedia had dave listed as the winner since 6 pm but the results were only supposed to be provided at the live broadcast

      sandman - 2011-10-05 00:39

      anyone can edit wikipedia

  • Analyst - 2011-10-04 21:41

Never underestimate the voting power of the teenage female...

      tebza - 2011-10-05 07:49

Analyst! you have hit the nail on the head...plus the teenage female have loads of airtime and are brilliant at mixit!

      MisterMR - 2011-10-05 09:39

The only way to make sure the results are fair is to allow one vote per person. Allowing a person to vote more than once means that the more persistent fans win. For Egsample. If 9 people vote once for Mark, but 1 person votes 20 times for Dave, then Dave gets more than double the votes of Mark even though he's way less popular.

  • Aabels - 2011-10-04 21:52

The most fuc*%ng boring idols finale ever. Shame, they both can't sing.

      agurkie - 2011-10-05 12:14

why did you watch the show you numbnut

  • Lynn - 2011-10-04 21:53

Hope he can afford some shampoo to give his hair a good wash now....... Sing he and many of these last 40 idols of this year cannot do is sad to say the least

  • FerretGee - 2011-10-04 21:54

Save this comment. By 4 October 2012, Mark Haze will have sold more CD's and made more money than Dave van Vuuren. It's all well and good to vote for someone by SMS, but it's record sales that will determine who really is the best. The whole show is a money making scheme for Vodacom, over two million votes by SMS and/or mxit at an average of R1.50 p/vote, (and that's just the final) do the maths people. the prizes are worth a fraction of the revenue. The whole show is a farce, The judges sway the vote with their comments even if they don't have the final say. Mark Haze was technically the best vocalist of them all but popularity got Dave the win, not talent.

      OllieMor - 2011-10-05 07:53

Oh, and you know it!! Perhaps they should've had a shampoo company as a sponsor...

      chantelle.lyons - 2011-10-05 09:25

O please...all that Mark can sing is Metal songs..that's where his talent is. An idol must be able to sing any type of song...

      donkerhond - 2011-10-05 10:06

@chantelle.lyons, Metal would frown on your comment and kick your ass back to teenage pop land if it heard the dribble coming from your mouth. \m/. Also, if you know anything from Mark's musical history, then you'd know his band plays more Alternative style than metal.

      John Jameson - 2011-10-05 10:46

I can see Dave selling a number forgettable tracks as single downloads or ringtones, mainly to madly in love teenage girls who will delete it and feel embarassed by their stupidity once they grow up. Meanwhile Mark Haze will be selling collectable full CD albums to their parents who will have the money to spend on something worth owning and keeping.

  • Lionel - 2011-10-04 22:02

does anyone find it funny that wikipedia had dave listed as the winner since 6 pm if the winners only should have been announced at the end of the live broadcast

      liam - 2011-10-05 08:29

you could go on wikipedia right now, and edit it to say mark had won, anyone can edit wikipedia at any time

  • Bree - 2011-10-04 22:13

Well, apparently a view of those voters appear to be deaf! Mark.. you're the winner in my eyes!!!!

  • Freakfloyd - 2011-10-04 23:17

Jealousy is so nasty, Davey Dave the rightful winner, shame why dont you guys run out and buy the new Sokkie CD. DAVE!!!!!!!!!Way To go My Idol!!!!!!!!!

      gaharaa - 2011-10-05 01:19

And you go grab your next beiber release. Your other idol.

  • Pippa - 2011-10-05 03:22

Have one of you that add these ugly comments ever try to sing, not in the shower, on stage? I think they've go a lot of courage and they are great. Dave have his family support and will go far, just watch the news.

      Wends - 2011-10-05 07:39

      Pippa they are just jealous.

  • Royston - 2011-10-05 05:21

"Time wounds all heels!" The boy is clueless when it comes to singing!!!!

      chantelle.lyons - 2011-10-05 09:26

Oh and you can do better lol

      Tolerant - 2011-10-05 11:12

The judges thought differently, try again next year.

  • Art - 2011-10-05 06:40

I would never watch SA Idols again if they did have another series, the judges have created hysteria over someone who cannot sing!!!! sorry, not worth watching.

      chantelle.lyons - 2011-10-05 09:28

Yes please, don't watch. Rather leave it to people that have a passion for music. Go play rather with your toys...

  • jaWat - 2011-10-05 06:52

The JITTERING JUNKY - no thanks.

  • sandy.mciver - 2011-10-05 07:40

Gosh I don't think professional music producers would waste their time and money on a person who is flat and can't sing! come on people enough of these negative comments. If you don't like the guy or idols why do you bother to watch and comment? I will never understand why South Africans are the most negative bunch on the planet! come on the sun is shining, we live in a beautiful country [crime and everything else aside] embrace it!!!

  • Anchorman - 2011-10-05 07:43

brother streep had to win Idols what a performance. lmao

  • Hannetjie - 2011-10-05 07:47

I like Dave but to me Mark is the 'ultimate' musician - he understands music and the music industry and will also go far!!! I am glad KFC also gave him a cash amount as I am sure he will use it wisely!!!!! I also believe that last years' winner Elvis Blue has done very well and is an example of what a person can do winning a competition such as Idols but still make the music he believes in!!!!!!

      hans - 2011-10-05 11:25

Hannetjie, looking at Marks figure I think he will be getting some of the money he has already spent at KFC.But seriously he was in my mind the most talented of the lot.

  • Difflock - 2011-10-05 07:52

Proposing to his girlfriend..?Dave,Dave,Dave...what are you doing...? Concentrate on your career that's unfolding in front of you!Why the hell proposing to your girlfriend! You gonna have thousands of teeny boppers hitting the stages! What's your babe gonna do?Hold your hand?

  • Angela - 2011-10-05 07:54

Wait for the end of the week, when Deloitte & Touche announce that they made a hash of the vote-counting! Another Double Title is coming! whahahaha! Very poor finale show, and very bad sound quality.. not impressive at all.

      Tolerant - 2011-10-05 11:14

Maybe you need to get a new TV?

  • xoxoxo - 2011-10-05 07:59

Congratulations Dave, you deserve it. Obviously the people putting you down have never been to a live show to appreciate your talent. Wow, amazing show last night!

  • skaapvryer - 2011-10-05 08:12

I'm really sad that he won, but if people like him, them so be it. Musically Mark is far superior, but I suppose the rocker-look constitutes more than real musical talent unfortunately.

  • Rita - 2011-10-05 08:15

Have to agree with Thandi! Well said!

  • Shadow - 2011-10-05 08:16

Scary part is people will still buy the single and not because of his "talent" but because it is "catchy". Anyone pick up how it sounds like a Kings of Leon rip off? Anyway, what was the name of the band that performed the "Never be on Idols...." song? They should be the idols. :-)

  • Burnicus - 2011-10-05 08:33

I blame Unathi - every time that woman comments, it's like she is at the Pope's funeral: Just over the top, blowing smoke up their rears and gushing like a teenager at a Johnny Depp meet n greet. They are not THAT good. But yeah, to the 18 000 people who didn't bother to vote for Mark for what ever reason: YOU SUCK.

      loveratskzn - 2011-10-05 14:49

The votes were rigged beacuse mark already has a singing career and a band. Daves voice is mediocre at best. marks singing career will be catapulted daves wont last and like many idols before will fade away into oblivion. Fact is dave is not that good finish and klaar.

  • Kev - 2011-10-05 08:33

sadly its the uninformed youth of today who vote in numbers based on look rather than talent. Dave being a thin emo freak with almost no singing ability beat Mark, a porky dude who can rock at international level based purely on the kids perception of who looks better. Sad, very sad. I reckon Mark goes on to become a huge local star.

      TrulyGoode - 2011-10-05 09:47

Hey Kev, don't mock Mark being porky - to me he could be a 2nd Meatloaf. Great moves and great sound...

  • siren703 - 2011-10-05 08:49

WOW who died and made you all music experts?!?!?! If the show and the contestants are so pathetic they why bother watching it at all and then bother reading anything that has anything at all to do with it?? Clearly some of you need to start record lables of your own, become producers, etc seeing as what we currently have in the country seemly knows nothing about the industry.

      agurkie - 2011-10-05 13:39

      well said!!

  • John - 2011-10-05 09:27

What a f_ing crap final! They cannot do anything original! It is more like a sunday school concert than anything else!

      agurkie - 2011-10-05 13:41

      why did you watch??poepol

  • Dindin - 2011-10-05 10:03

I personally find it completely distasteful the manner in which Idols presented the wooden mic award. Poking fun at the poor lady that clearly has low self esteem and making her perform on live camera to audience and viewers. I pity her for the repercussions this may have caused in her personal life as people will mock her and have no sympathy. I hope the undue stress has not affected her pregnancy. Shame on you Idols!

      Burnicus - 2011-10-05 10:10

Yes it was disgraceful. Clearly she was not ready for that public humiliation. Shame on you MNet for this shallow stunt. Rather do a pre-recorded handover or something. There is no need to mock people.

      Thandi - 2011-10-05 11:30

The girl in question knew exactly what she was in for before she set foot on the stage last night, and she was handsomely rewarded.

      Dindin - 2011-10-05 11:33

      @Thandi, you know this how?

      Derek - 2011-10-05 13:49

Agree, it was digracefull and spoilt what was otherwise a great production! M-net, to publically humiliate a pregnant lady who was so clearly out of her depth is quite disgusting and I would almost suggest the HRC get involved and strongly censure all involved.

  • Bev - 2011-10-05 10:34

Congrats Dave. Maybe the some of the other contestants will now go on a diet. Yikes they are huge!!!!!!!!!!

  • Flasheart - 2011-10-05 11:09

    Another straight-to-KFM "winner". Ho hum.

  • hans - 2011-10-05 11:19

I cant wait for Dave's new c.d. I have trouble falling asleep and I reckon it will be better than a sleeping pill.

  • Louise - 2011-10-05 11:34

I am amazed at how many negative comments have been posted!! Why can't people be happy for the guy and not so downright personal and nasty??? I say well done Dave, I hope you and Mark go far!!!

      loveratskzn - 2011-10-05 14:55

Is got nothing to do with dave as a person it has to do with his ability to sing. The fact is that even crushanda is a more consitant and better singer. mark clearly is the better singer and should have been the winner. I personally belive the votes were rigged because mark has alreday got a band and some sort of a singing career even though it is still minor.

  • Yolande Struwig - 2011-10-05 15:03

Dave you are in amazing musician and I appreciate your love for music! You are passionate! My fiance and me supported you from when you did your 1st audition! Your voice is beautiful! Your first single is great! GO DAVE!

  • Darius Gray - 2011-10-06 07:16

Seriously did anyone expect Mark to win. He doesn't meet the requirements of an Idol as defined by the superficialist of the world. Dave is a pretty boy with no talent but being easy on the eye get's him a ticket in the world of glamour etc Oh well - I look foward to the day when talent wins over looks but I won't hold my breath.

  • caren schobermayr - 2011-10-06 16:36

Can't wait for Mark's first CD to be released, will definately be buying it.

  • Ann De Koker - 2011-10-07 14:41
