Johannesburg - More than 1 000 people auditioned for Idols 8 in Soweto as the last round of auditions came to an end at the weekend.
Between 700 and 800 people will receive the opportunity to perform for the Idols judges - Randall Abrahams, Unathi Msengana and Gareth Cliff - next month. Only 100 will be invited to Sun City for another round of auditions.
The eighth season of Idols is a joint production of M-Net and DStv channel Mzansi Magic and will be broadcast on both channels from June 3.
M-Net spokesperson Lani Lombard said more people will be watching Idols this season because of Mzansi Magic's involvement.
Warning
Lombard said despite Abrahams's warning that not one song from Adele, the British singer who recently won six Grammy Awards, will be allowed, participants paid no attention.
"Every second song was Adele's Someone Like You."
One of the hopefuls, Angelique "Angel" Hayward, from Witbank, said she auditioned because God has blessed her with talent and that she must share it.
"Every year my friends and family encourage me to audition, but I was always so scared; that's why I didn't go the auditions in Sandton earlier this month. But now it feels right!"
She is busy qualifying as a hairdresser and works in her mother's salon in Witbank.
"I'm a bit of a 'drama queen'. I dramatise everything!"
