Kokkedoor on kykNET a folksy food fight

Cape Town - Kokkedoor, the new Afrikaans food competition reality show with a twist, will premiere tonight on kykNET (DStv 144) at 20:00 and will set out to find South Africa's best nostalgic cook.

The novel premise of the show, produced by Homebrew Films and set in the picturesque town of Prince Albert, sees ordinary South Africans battling it out over the course of 13 episodes to create the best well-known folksy food recipes but properly updated for the 21st century.

A lot of the Kokkedoor contestants come from small places across South Africa, featuring contestants like Poppie Coetzer from Kriel, Riekies Huisamen from Krugersdorp, Mynhardt Joubert from Malmesbury, Rendil Pietersen from Wellington, Toitnette du Toit from Montagu, Marinda Engelbrecht from Hopefield, Sarel Loots from Sabie and Theresa de Vries from Brandvlei.

Race against time

While the pressure (and the pressure cooker) is on and time is running out, viewers will see contestants battle it out in a race against the clock trying to prepare dishes which usually take – and require – a lot of time to be done properly.

Mariëtta Kruger is the presenter with the food experts Nic van Wyk and Hetta van Deventer-Terblanche as the judges.

In the first episode of Kokkedoor this evening, viewers will see the 20 contestants hit the road to the so-called "home" of "nostalgia food", Prince Albert with their precious old school food recipes in their suitcases.

Challenges in future episodes include such things as preparing Sunday lunch meals, church bazaar baking, rugby braais, making desserts, cooking jam, whipping up koeksisters and milk tart and even baking bread.

*Don't forget to catch the first episode of Kokkedoor, airing on kykNET tonight at 20:00.
