Johannesburg - Language was the biggest obstacle at the recent Muvhango auditions held at The Bassline in Newtown, Johannesburg at the weekend, reports SowetanLive.
Young actors and actresses were invited to audition for four new roles on the SABC2 soapie - two for Venda-speaking boys and two for Zulu and Sotho-speaking teenagers.
Hopefuls auditioning for the roles of the two boys were expected to be fluent in Venda as they would play the sons of the chief of Venda.
Sowetan reported that more than 50 youngsters auditioned for the roles of Mulondo and Muvhango using English scripts, but many struck out when they had to perform in Venda.
Eight-year-old Tebogo Mphelo impressed with his impromptu performance alongside Muvhango actress Mulalo Mudau. However, his Venda speech tripped him up and resulted in him falling out of the running for the role.
Director Uvelile Bangani told the newspaper that while promising young stars were found in Venda, transport presented a problem for these actors.
It is not yet known if all the roles have been filled.
Muvhango airs on SABC2 Mondays to Thursdays at 21:00.
