Massive SABC schedule disruption in 2013

Cape Town – Massive SABC schedule disruption is coming to SABC1, SABC2 and SABC3 in 2013 when Generations and The Bold and the Beautiful will suddenly move from SABC1 to SABC2, with Isidingo on SABC3 jumping to 21:30 at the end of January.

Meanwhile, SABC1's normal primetime line-up - a massive money-spinner for the public broadcaster - will be virtually wiped out, with mix-matched shows being dumped on SABC2's schedule which will also be heavily disrupted.

The broadcaster's only commercial TV channel, the lifestyle channel SABC3 which hardly sees any sport besides cricket or the recent Venus and Serena Williams tennis match, will suddenly show soccer.

The massive schedule disruption is part of the SABC's plan to show the Afcon 2013 soccer tournament.

When and where is my show?

However, the programming shuffle will likely leave millions of South African viewers fuming and confused as to not only what happened to their popular TV shows, but where and when to find them.

The SABC plans to move several SABC1 shows come January 2013 to SABC2 in order to accommodate Afcon 2013.

Even SABC3 won't be spared where the soap Isidingo will see two massive timeslot changes in just one month from the beginning of next year.

From 19 January huge programming disruption will hit viewers on all three of the SABC's channels on the day-to-day schedules between 16:30 and midnight - affecting some of the SABC's biggest advertising revenue earners such as The Bold and the Beautiful, Montana, Generations, Zone 14, RGB, Friends Like These and Isidingo.

Several popular SABC2 shows will simply disappear as SABC1 shows are imposed on SABC2 timeslots.

With SABC1 broadcasting 29 Afcon 2013 matches, The Bold and the Beautiful will be moving to SABC2 at 18:00.

What will the advertisers say?

SABC2's "normal" schedule will only resume at 21:00 at night.

SABC2 will now also carry SABC1's Xhosa/Zulu news at 19:30 and the Siswati/Ndelebe news is also moving from SABC1 to SABC2 and to a new timeslot of 17:30.

Generations is also moving from SABC1 to SABC2 but remains at 20:00.

SABC1 dramas such as Montana, Zone 14 and Tshisa all move to SABC2 as well. Real Goboza is also moving to SABC2 and into a new timeslot of 17:30. Friends Like These is also moving to SABC2 at 18:30.

How viewers and advertisers are going to react to the massive scheduling disruption is yet unknown.

SABC3 will show at least four Afcon 2013 soccer matches, impacting SABC3's biggest TV property - its daily soap Isidingo.

Isidingo will be moved to 21:30 from 28 January.

      jack.blacking.56 - 2012-11-22 09:00

btw...why are we not allowed to comment on story: Pilot behind incident twice failed exam. Is it because people will get upset and simply cant take the truth? That AA sucks!!!

      elewies - 2012-11-22 09:04

Yeah but we still have to fund them

      JedMowat - 2012-11-22 09:32

The exact reason parody accounts like @sabctoo exist.

  • Lana Van Der Berg - 2012-11-22 08:27

Don't watch any of those crappy channels so I don't really care, but this just goes to show how the SABC is run by a bunch of complete morons!

  • obadia.segwape - 2012-11-22 08:27

how about a sport chanel sabc.oops i must be hearing or seeing things

  • dragonfire47 - 2012-11-22 08:36

omg what am i gonna do, no reruns of the bold episodes that are a thousand years old,and no rap crap at 3am, im shattered, stuff my dvd and blu collection and ordering from amazon, my life is over, WHO GIVES A CRAP SABC

      Tharina25 - 2012-11-22 09:29

You don't have your facts straight. Bold is just 1 year behind America you idiot!

      alwyn.vantonder - 2012-11-22 10:59

I guess Tharina is watching.. But we thank you for correcting us Tharina!

  • fanie.essgee - 2012-11-22 08:36

    Who Cares....

  • kamohelo.olifant - 2012-11-22 08:37

    Thanks we have supersport

  • vaughan.lund - 2012-11-22 08:46

Since the SABC's favourite show is McGyver, not sure how "millions" are going to care about things like Isidingo...

  • grant.logan.94 - 2012-11-22 08:49

People makes such ignorant comments. Do you realise how big shows like Generations, B&B and Isidingo are? Not everyone can afford or wants to be ripped off by DSTV so obviously there's a market for SABC. I'll rather pay my tv licence and watch Isidingo then pay a fortune for dstv's repeats and subsidising channels which I have no interest in.

      heinrich.spreeth - 2012-11-22 09:05

Don't have dstv ,but I sure as hell don't watch sabc , don't even have an antenna connected to my tv which I use as a large monitor. I do however pay my tv licence like a good citisen. So my comment on that I would like to see a vote in SA on SABC is not made in ignorance.

      heinrich.spreeth - 2012-11-22 09:09

what the SABC needs is a set top box so that you have a choice. I don't have a choice currently. I can disable the tuner on my tv but noone is going to believe me that i did and i am not sure how to close my account/force payment at sabc. I am paying for a product that I don't use and don't want.

      klipkop.degroote - 2012-11-22 10:25

Shame man, I will think of you when I enjoy National Geographic, Discovery, History, Mnet (series and movies channels) Supersport and international news. DSTV Comapact option is like ± R260 a month, sure its a bit of a rip off but then I dont have to watch Isidingo. The channels I mentioned is really quite nice, yes they repeat big time but man you probably only watch Isidingo or max 3 to 5 shows on SABC. For me watching tumble weed rolling by is way more exciting than SABC. Just enjoy Survivor, The Ride and Braai Master and sometimes Riaan Cruywagen.

      ulandi.bekker - 2012-11-22 12:07

      grant.logan.94 - 2012-11-22 16:00

Don't feel sorry for me klopkop, I have a hard drive, wink wink. That's REAL choice, not dstv giving you what they think you want to watch.

      ab.normal.961 - 2012-11-22 21:10

It's a disgrace that SABC has been broadcasting all these years and still only have 3 channels. They should just shut-down SABC TV as it will save the country a lot of money and bring back SPRINGBOK radio.

  • thato.seloane - 2012-11-22 08:52

What is so difficult in creating a channel dedicated to sport. You don't need stand studio like super sport , all you do is play the damn sports live from wherever they are, no need for presenters as well

  • Teekm - 2012-11-22 08:58

    knock urself out...who cares anyway

  • stephen.j.dickson.3 - 2012-11-22 09:02

Screw the SABC and AFCON. They can perish for all I care........bottom line.

  • mfanah.radebe - 2012-11-22 09:03

Why can't they have sport channel. But it cool as long as they don't take my gogo's generations off

  • matt.ward.14203 - 2012-11-22 09:13

SABC Has a "Prime Time" ? ? ? ? ? ? Whats "Prime" about WWE Wrestling or Outsurance Ads ????

      Tharina25 - 2012-11-22 09:30

I thought the wrestling was on etv?

      rob.gunning.1 - 2012-11-22 13:26

      lol. So true

  • Jeremy - 2012-11-22 09:13

I've said it's crazy the SABC having exclusive rights to a major sporting fixture like Afcon when it doesn't have a dedicated sports channel. How come Supersport has 10 or more dedicated channels - and the "national" broadcaster has none? Pathetic!

      rob.gunning.1 - 2012-11-22 13:27

The SABC gets the rights and then sells it to Multichoice. Money for nothing.

  • larry.simon.7 - 2012-11-22 09:13

Trouble is these clowns charge you license fees and sue you if u don't pay. Look at Massmart. This is simply another tax to redistribute to the ANC who have their snouts in the trough.

  • gary.desousa.7 - 2012-11-22 09:39

I suppose the feeling is "who cares"

  • carolyn.dewrance - 2012-11-22 09:42

so they stuff the programs again Well don't pay the licence fee then and I mean everyone in the country should not pay. Lets see if football is more important then paying the actors a decent salary.

  • theMichaelHawthorne - 2012-11-22 09:48

Banana television for a banana republic...

  • theMichaelHawthorne - 2012-11-22 09:49

Get an lcd panel... you don't need a monitor with a tuner

  • jacyjays.letsoalo - 2012-11-22 10:26

Well a good move for us soccer lovers, however what amazes me is that prior to the 2010 Soccer World Cup they said they will form a Sports Channel and we are still waiting! Anyway they can't live without Generations...

  • anakin.skyvader.9 - 2012-11-22 10:43

And then they wonder why people download torrents to escape from garbage tv... wouldn't it be fun if they could start testing HD at the same time as the afcon 2013 transmissions and then really screw up all the content? We are now so far behind international tv standards it's a sick joke. While the SABC fights with ICASA and ICASA fights with e-tv and Dstv the internet is taking over the entire show: Do a Google search for tv content by using .tv in the domain description on Google [ie instead of .com or .org or just put in .tv] and do a search for movies/live streaming sport and see what comes up, so much that you will never have time to watch it all. Then back to the SABC e-tv with their outdated terrestrial analogue broadcasts... I can't wait.

  • ulandi.bekker - 2012-11-22 11:54

does this mean I will only able to watch 7de laan at 10pm? (i know im gonna get a lot of thumbs down, but I love 7de laan, better than Tshisa, Generations and isidingo)

      jamesrw.wadsworth - 2012-11-22 16:00

7de Laan is getting a bit on these days. With so much incest with everyone dating everyone else, I am getting a big sick of the show. They need to get new actors. Ou Baas for one, including Hilda. Ahhh,,,

  • quarty.vanzyl - 2012-11-22 12:21

I was hoping to read that SABC 1,2,and 3 are all closing down. Damn!!

  • quarty.vanzyl - 2012-11-22 12:22

any body here paying tv licences??

      jamesrw.wadsworth - 2012-11-22 16:06

Of course, didn't you know that the sentence for not paying your license is worse than killing someone.

  • olivia.karnak - 2012-11-22 12:36

WHO the hell cares???!!! I mean REALLY now, geees!

  • cindy.beckley - 2012-11-22 12:46

    Oh dear, soccer again.

  • anthony.vale.92 - 2012-11-22 13:14

  • daantjie.profieltwee - 2012-11-23 10:36

What the hell is going to happen to 7de Laan?

  • jo.vankatwijk - 2012-11-23 18:16

All the DStv owners should spare a thought for the people who simply cannot afford that service. Having said that, the SABC certainly cannot be commended for this seemingly idiotic rescheduling. The current scheduled programming sucks at the best of times and current channels should be dedicated to specific languages. Personally I don't mind if B&B and D.O.O.L disappear forever, but we need better English- language programmes in their place. Oh, well, more time to read then and we hire/buy dvd's.

  • nel.westhuizen - 2012-11-24 08:08

What cricket? Not sure when last I saw cricket on SABC... I pay my TV licence, apparently the right thing to do. I think it's time to cancel as this would be the right thing to do...
