Massive SABC schedule disruption in 2013

Cape Town – Massive SABC schedule disruption is coming to SABC1, SABC2 and SABC3 in 2013 when Generations and The Bold and the Beautiful will suddenly move from SABC1 to SABC2, with Isidingo on SABC3 jumping to 21:30 at the end of January.

Meanwhile, SABC1's normal primetime line-up - a massive money-spinner for the public broadcaster - will be virtually wiped out, with mix-matched shows being dumped on SABC2's schedule which will also be heavily disrupted.

The broadcaster's only commercial TV channel, the lifestyle channel SABC3 which hardly sees any sport besides cricket or the recent Venus and Serena Williams tennis match, will suddenly show soccer.

The massive schedule disruption is part of the SABC's plan to show the Afcon 2013 soccer tournament.

When and where is my show?

However, the programming shuffle will likely leave millions of South African viewers fuming and confused as to not only what happened to their popular TV shows, but where and when to find them.

The SABC plans to move several SABC1 shows come January 2013 to SABC2 in order to accommodate Afcon 2013.

Even SABC3 won't be spared where the soap Isidingo will see two massive timeslot changes in just one month from the beginning of next year.

From 19 January huge programming disruption will hit viewers on all three of the SABC's channels on the day-to-day schedules between 16:30 and midnight - affecting some of the SABC's biggest advertising revenue earners such as The Bold and the Beautiful, Montana, Generations, Zone 14, RGB, Friends Like These and Isidingo.

Several popular SABC2 shows will simply disappear as SABC1 shows are imposed on SABC2 timeslots.

With SABC1 broadcasting 29 Afcon 2013 matches, The Bold and the Beautiful will be moving to SABC2 at 18:00.

What will the advertisers say?

SABC2's "normal" schedule will only resume at 21:00 at night.

SABC2 will now also carry SABC1's Xhosa/Zulu news at 19:30 and the Siswati/Ndelebe news is also moving from SABC1 to SABC2 and to a new timeslot of 17:30.

Generations is also moving from SABC1 to SABC2 but remains at 20:00.

SABC1 dramas such as Montana, Zone 14 and Tshisa all move to SABC2 as well. Real Goboza is also moving to SABC2 and into a new timeslot of 17:30. Friends Like These is also moving to SABC2 at 18:30.

How viewers and advertisers are going to react to the massive scheduling disruption is yet unknown.

SABC3 will show at least four Afcon 2013 soccer matches, impacting SABC3's biggest TV property - its daily soap Isidingo.

Isidingo will be moved to 21:30 from 28 January.
