Cape Town – A MasterChef South Africa Celebrity Edition?

That is what M-Net could possibly be considering as a further TV brand extension for the current MasterChef South Africa being broadcast on the channel.

However, M-Net says they have taken no decision on further seasons of MasterChef SA.

Insiders in South Africa's TV industry are buzzing that a MasterChef South Africa Celebrity Edition is rumoured to be in the works.

One long-time TV producer told Channel24 earlier in the week that calls have apparently been made to various people - technical crew specifically - asking if they are available for a whole month in Cape Town in August.

'Murmuring under the radar'

Cape Town is host to the current first season of MasterChef South Africa. "Everyone seems to be murmuring under the radar," said the source, a local producer powerhouse.

A celebrity version of MasterChef South Africa isn't that far-fetched an idea.

At the media launch of MasterChef South Africa in Johannesburg in March, just before the show started – in the very restaurant the winner will get as prize – the press were entertained to a gaggle of celebrities who ended up competing against each other.

Former M-Net presenter Ashley Hayden, who also appeared in Survivor: South Africa: Santa Carolina, and won on a celebrity episode of Come Dine with Me on BBC Entertainment, handily won the contest.

M-Net says the pay TV broadcaster has not decided on whether to serve up any more MasterChef.

"M-Net has made no decisions with regards to further seasons of MasterChef South Africa. The series is a huge hit among our viewers, but we are still evaluating if and when it will be viable to commission a second season," says M-Net.

Celebrity editions of any reality show cheapen the whole idea.., usually because the so-called celebs are either washed up has beens or pathetic primadonna's..!!

Exactly what I was thinking , having celebrity editions is like M-net masturbating. Get some new ideas or run a second season with new contestants and better the show with what your learned first time around!!!

And we don't have any celebrities in SA, they are all, at best, fame whores with no talent/

Wow!! A cook off between Colin Moss and Ryk Neethling, possibly the most exciting thing to hit mnet since The Wild.

At least wait until the show has lost interest by maybe season 3 then do a celebrity version. Don't kill it before it started.

  • maricha.knightvanheerden - 2012-05-18 17:31

    oh please don't do that!

  • stanton.clarke - 2012-05-18 20:18

Can't SA come up with their own shows. We seem to be following everything thats already happening in Europe.

Celeb edition will just spoil the whole show, these reality shows that do celeberity editions are so over rated and boring to watch,as most of these so called celebs have huge egos that annoyes viewers...Please keep the show as is or 'CAN' the whole thing!!!
