MasterChef SA takes the cake

Cape Town - The latest eviction from the MasterChef SA kitchen was bittersweet.

21-year-old Jade de Waal from Cape Town handed in her apron after her cake flopped.

Deena, Thys and Jade were the bottom three contestants from the previous week's wine pairing challenge and were now tasked with recreating an intricate passion hazelnut gateau in the pressure test.

The gateau which they had to recreate was made by The Cape Grace Hotel's head pastry chef Lorraine Meany.

Deena was initially worried as baking is his "biggest fear". Thys was in his element as a lover of desserts and Jade was raring to go with positivity. Two hours in Deena looked frazzled while Thys and Jade seemed to have things under control.

Then Thys's mousse didn't set, Jade's glaze was too hot and their attempts literally flopped in front of the viewers' eyes. Deena's gateau however most closely resembled the original and received positive comments from the judges.

After her third time in a pressure test, Jade was sent home.

Khaya vs Reuben

The episode kicked off with a cook-off between the winner of the wine pairing challenge - Khaya - and celebrity chef Reuben Riffel. The task was to create a seafood fricassée. Khaya was given a 15-minute head start and could ask Reuben anything.

The judges then blind-tasted Khaya and Reuben's dishes. While Khaya lost out to Reuben by four points, she received positive comments from the judges and Chef Pete preferred her gnocchi to Reuben's.

Spicy

At the end of Tuesday's episode it was revealed that the remaining eight contestants are travelling to the spice island Zanzibar where they will continue on in the competition.

MasterChef SA airs on M-Net and M-Net HD on Tuesdays at 19:30.
