Cape Town - Two of the Masterchef SA judges have gained weight while the third has lost weight since starting the taste tests for the reality show two and half months ago.

Andrew Atkinson found it difficult to maintain his normal exercise programme during the filming of the series - and has paid for it by gaining a total of 5kg.

"I ran between 25km and 30km per week, but after we started the series, it became more difficult to exercise."

Pete Goffe-Wood's secret

Benny Masekwameng in turn picked up 1.5kg. "I really hoped I would not gain weight, but, oh well. It did not turn out that way."

And Pete Goffe-Wood's secret to keeping the weight off?

He has lost 1kg because he stopped drinking alcohol and the series forced him to eat more often.

"I always drank a bottle of wine with my wife in the evening and also didn't eat regularly," he confessed.

From next week, TV viewers will be able to see how the top 18 contestants fair under the watchful eye of the three judges at the Nederburg wine estate.

"We consumed 4 litres of water daily because temperatures in Paarl rose to 45°C," Goffe-Wood explained.

"There was air conditioning in the test kitchen, but with the TV recording it had to be switched off because it made such a noise."

A man with a cooler full of water also constantly followed the judges, because they had to drink water to clean their palettes between tastings.

MasterChef SA airs on Tuesdays at 19:30 on M-Net and M-Net HD and repeats on Wednesdays at 07:30 and 17:00.
